Re: Why I'm returning the 4K P50 (with great sadness)

In response to your question about RMA timing I received my P70 on January 18. Worked on it together with Lenovo support until Feb. 1 then together decided to pack it in as the video card was deemed broken. They set up an RMA and said the RMA department would contact me within 48 hours.

The RMA department sent a return shipping label and new order number for a complete replacement within 24 hours. I received my new P70 on Feb 11 and returned the old one at no charge the next day. I live in Toronto.

My experience with my P70 RMA will hopefully be like yours. I contacted support on Wednesday after working with some Lenovo personnel and requested a replacement system since my display was exhibiting significant backlight bleeding in several areas. The RMA label appeared yesterday stating to return the system within 10 days, but the customer service person told me to keep using the machine until the new one arrived. Hopefully the new system will have a better 4k display panel.

I am sure you won't experience any problems. I too called Lenovo support about their 10 day return requirement as stated on the RMA email. They really should edit that email template to say "You must return your old device within 10 days after receiving your new device."

Re: Why I'm returning the 4K P50 (with great sadness)

About a week after I submitted the RMA request, I decided to reach out to Lenovo sales, they had me contact the tech support first to get a case #, and then they finally got my RMA approved, sans of any restocking fees, due to all the issues I'd listed. At least that's done now. I still find the P50 to be a great machine, in theory, and some of the issues may be resolved soon (fan, sound pops), whereas some others could be resolved by downgrading to a lower screen (scaling), but overall, I think the scren quality, which is supposed to be even worse for the 1080p compared to 4K, is what's making me reconsider a different brand.

In case anyone else stumbles upon this with a google or forum search, I too have a 4k P50, it's specs are: 16GB DDR4, I7-6820, Samsung 850 Pro 512GB NVM.e, M2000m GPU.

I had a lot of the issues but have since resolved practically all of them.

Granted, I don't run Windows 10 on this -I do on a personal device and have since early beta, I prefer 8.1 for work until 10 is more tested. I find very little DPI issues on my screen personally after a handful of tweaks.

With the google issues, I ran into that too, I noticed it and the video issue almost immediately out of the box. I updated to the newest nvidia driver straight from the nvidia site, updated the bios, changed to discrete graphics only, etc. I ended up disabling hardware acceleration in chrome and it all but resolved the issue. There are still a small amount of related quirks, I assume it is related to a video/optimus driver issue.

I'm not sure of the variance in screens but mine seems pretty bright, I wish it were a tad brighter at time but 95% of the time it is bright enough (and I usually turn the brightness down a little).

My battery life is usually a minimum of 5 hours, sometimes 6+.

I only recently noticed the fan issue, I am probably going to try a DIY thermal solution on the PCH to resolve it. Most people have commented that it is related to the PCH temperature.

Also, I'm running a fresh install and didn't have any issues with the calibrator. It's worked a number of times for me.

In response to customer reports of a decrease in available battery life on some ThinkPads, including the T460s, X1 Yoga, P50, and P70 models, running Synaptics Fingerprint Driver v5.0.62.30, Lenovo has released an updated fingerprint driver.

The Synaptics Fingerprint Driver v 5.0.88.04 can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS105408

Thank you,

My P50 is now brilliant: (Win7-64 (obviously), 4K, SSD, 32GB, M1000M, Colour sensor)

2016-04-01, 8:41 AM

Hi guys,
here's a story with a happy end and some advice on how to make things work.

On arrival the Quadro performance and sound quality were very poor.

Quadro:
I would recommend installing the newest Quadro Mobile drivers from nVidia BEFORE you install any software on your P50. I did it the other way round and programs like Photoshop would NOT use the Quadro until Photoshop was reinstalled with the new nVidia drivers already in place.
Now Photoshop runs superfast and even hardware hungry apps like Unreal 4 or ZBrush pretty much always max out the 60fps framerate.

Sound:
You HAVE TO find and disable the "Dolby Enhancement" option within the depths of the audio playback device options.
It makes everything sound CRAP! Disable it and then use the various volume and gain settings to get the volume back up - sounds brilliant now. (With headphones.. I don't use speakers..)

Fan noise - never had a problem

4K Screen - brilliant colour and reasonably bright for indoors. (Sunlight is not going to work)
I mostly run it on 1920x1080 though and am not bothered by the slight softness.

Colour sensor: Works perfectly! I got a self calibrating $6000 EIZO reference screen right next to it and the colours are fairly close!! And yes - If you calibrate it to the "D50" standard it's going to be more yellow than the typical bluish shade of white but that's what professional artists want. If you don't like it you can calibrate it to a more "blue" D65.

I get 5h of battery life out of it, running at 1080p. Maybe Win7 drains less than Win10? (Win10 being a disaster anyway)

I'm running 2x 4K screens and get no VSync issues.

So... I'm happy and would recommend the P50 to professionals. If you plan on using Win10, don't appreciate colour accuracy and don't like to do firmware updates and some driver-hunting, then other laptops might be more suitable.

All the best,
Jay
