Will not wake up from sleep

2008-10-01, 5:08 AM

I'm having problems with sleep mode on my new W500. I run Windows Vista Business 64 and everytime it goes into sleep mode (powered or on battery), it does not wake up. The fan starts but that's it.

What's causing this?

I did a fresh install today, complete reformat. I installed Windows Vista updates and Lenovo ones too. It still does the same thing. If the computer goes to sleep there is nothing else to do but to power it down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.

This is frustrating.

So I'm still looking for answers and I found this:  http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63567-power-options-sleep-mode-problems.html.

A bit down the page shows a command I can use: powercfg -a

So I try it and It says:
The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby ( S3 ) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
It says S1 is not supported. This is not normal.

Not sure if we had the same problem...

W500, when it goes to sleep, won't wake up, fan starts, optical drive starts, but no response, have to hold power button to turn it off then turn back on, annoying...

chibislick, could you check when your fan starts, is the small moon light (indicator for sleep mode) still on or turned off?

Yes, looks like we're having the same problem. Fan starts, optical drive starts, but that's it. Yes, as I remember the Moon icon stays lit.

You said "we had..". I assume you solved the problem?

Sorry about the word "had", I should say "we are HAVING"    :P

Still seeking a solution... if the moon icon stays light on, we have exactly the same issue on our machine.

Last night I've been trying on os re-install (tried both XP and Vista), no luck...

I suspect there's something wrong with video drivers (w500's switcheable graphics card), the reason is only when the display driver has been installed then "sleep" is enabled... Driver for Thinkpad PM Device won't enable 'sleep' feature.

Any other user of W500 got this problem?

Exact same problem.

I don't follow you though. Are you saying you have to actually install the video drivers before you can put the computer to sleep? I haven't tested sleep mode BEFORE installing video drivers myself.

I did check if changing from "Switchable Graphics" to "Discreet Graphics" and vice-versa in the BIOS changed anything, but no luck.

I remember reading somewhere there was a link between graphics drivers and system sleep, I can't remember where though and it's a big vague.

I've tested with brand new system installed without installing video driver, after installed PM driver the "sleep" was still grey.

I also did what you did in BIOS, no luck...

huh.... at the moment I have no choice but have "sleep" disabled. Hopefully nobody touch Fn+F4.....

I've been trusting thinkpad for so many years, this time it gives me a big shame...

I have contacted Lenovo (IBM) AUS support, someone will come to my place tomoz and take it to the repair base then return it next week after it's fixed.

Let's see if the problem is caused by hardware.

You can change what Fn+F4 does in your ThinkVantage Power Manager, I've set it to "Do Nothing".

Please let me know what was the problem when you get your laptop fixed!

Good luck
