Windows on second hand w540

2017-06-02, 20:28 PM

Hi everyone, so I am thinking of buying a second hand w540 from the net and I have some questions: How do I go about formatting and re-installing windows when I receive it? I heard something about the serial number being available in the bios and the installer being available in a partition on the HDD. Is that true ? Also I read mixed reviews about that machine. I want to do photo and video editing on it, would it be good if I swap the FHD panel to the 3K one? And if any of you can confirm that it works with davinci resolve, that would be appreciated. Thank you

It had a recovery partition initially, but on a used one, it is impossible to know.  The high-res screen needs a different lid and cable, so swapping isn't as easy as switching panels.

Thank you. If it doesn't have a recovery partition, what are my options ? I read that for a FHD to 3k panel swap, only the cable needs to be changed. The lid has to be changed if its a HD(1366x768) to 3k swap. I could be wrong though.

If you don't have a recovery partition, you can always use a regular Windows install disk to perform a clean install. If you know which version and edition of Windows it came with you can use the same one to leverage the existing Windows product key on the machine (automatic on 8 or higher, look for a sticker for 7).

You can then download and install required ThinkPad specific drivers and utilities using System Update:

Hi, thank you so much! So if I install windows 8, the license key will be added automatically if I understand well? Also from where will I be able to get the windows installer legally for free ?

thank you

Assuming the W540 was ordered with Windows 8, the built in license key will work. Make sure you've gotten the matching Home/Pro edition too.

You can get a legitimate installer directly from Microsoft a few ways; here's one:
http://www.wintips.org/download-windows-8x-iso/

Since your machine would have had Windows 8.x preinstalled, use Option 2.

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen
