Windows restarting overnight after the latest update

2020-04-07, 11:56 AM

I've noticed that when leaving the P72 overnight, plugged in, it tends to restart.  This never happened before the latest major windows update.  I would often see uptime of around two weeks.

No changes to my settings.

// rant

I was really impressed by the P72's Windows 10 Pro Workstation for being able to stay awake when I wanted it to and when running out of battery, resuming with all my apps opening again in their current state.

Now it's started to behave like the X1C that was never able to resume a previous session, no matter what I changed the settings to.  One of the major deciding factor to sell the X1C last year and get a MBP was due to that frustration.

// rant off

Any similar experience and are there ways to force Windows to (go back to) not shutting off and / or resuming the previous session?

Try this:

Bring up your start menu and start typing "Check for updates", and choose it from the search results.  Once in there, click on Advanced Options.  In there you can tweak a few things like setting it to not restart as soon as possible, and you can choose to completely pause updates for a period of time if you like, and choose how quickly updates are installed once available.

It's not the Windows update restarts that are bothering me. It's when I put the computer down at 11 pm, then pick it back up at 9 am the morning after, it will have restarted. My X1C was like that, so I sold it.

Fair enough, but I think your problem is with Microsoft rather than with Lenovo.  Unless you think it's from Lenovo Vantage maybe?  You can turn off auto-updates in Vantage to see if that helps.

Yes the evidence point to MS. The problem still remains though.

Hi!

If you go in Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update, View update history, can you reconcile the dates updates installed with the moments you find your machine rebooted?

I recommend you go in Advanced options, and set:

  • Update options, Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to : OFF
  • Update notifications, Show a notification when your PC requires a restart to finish updating ON
  • Choose when updates are installed, Feature updates deferral to 364
  • Choose when updates are installed, Quality updates deferral to 21

Those settings will prevent problems from bad updates that are installed, pulled, then fixed, installed again, pulled again because of problems, and re-issued again (usually fixed for good), and installed again.

As for resuming work where you left automatically, go to Settings, Privacy, Activity history, and check Store my activity on this device. That might be what you are looking for!

As a side note, the advice above was in part taken from https://www.askwoody.com/ It's a great place to know how good (or bad!) this month's updates are behaving!

Martin

Edit: With those settings, my machine has uptimes of weeks...

Maybe it was just teething problems for the W10 update.

It's been running fine for a number of days now.

Being a security conscious software engineer I do go and check for updates daily and all my restarts are manual.  That's why I wasn't expect automatic updates lynching my session.

Thanks everyone for their input.

Hi Hartmannsson, I understand that you want to do the right thing and be safe by installing the latest security updates. Unfortunately, Microsoft's internal testing is somewhat broken (most testing done in VMs, so not much hardware testing is done, Insider program mostly marketing with broken bug sorting, limited real-life testing). The real update testing is done in production by Windows Home users, and "Seekers"(people who press "Check for Updates"). Unless you want to submit bug reports or need to test those patches early (Insider Preview ring should be useful), my recommendation is to use the settings I described above and check the AskWoody website. Woody, Patch Lady Susan and a ton of followers take a good look at the patches to find their bugs and workarounds while keeping us safe. The website uses a "DefCon" rating for guidance, and during the last 5 years, only 2-3 times where patches needed before the 1st of the following month. The 21 days update delay matches those observations. Being an IT professional, I wouldn't compromise stability with bad patches unless the security risk warrants it. So, I leave the BETA testing to Home users and Seekers, and reap the value of their fails with my greater stability and security ;-) It's only a tip, feel free to use or not! Martin
