best NVMe for P50?

2021-04-20, 6:43 AM

Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing a second NVMe drive to fill my second slot.  I already have the NVMe tray with heat-pad.

I recall from a lenovo employee on this forum that the P50 only supports single-sided m.2 drives of the 2280 for factor.

I was about to spring for the 1TB 970 evo when it was discontinued from B&H (where I have a lot of gift card money and have committed to purchasing my new NVMe SSD).  Please advise as to what are the best (top 3) NVMe drives in your opinion that would be compatible with the P50, at least 1 TB in storage, a reliable brand or model, and good in terms of lifespan/hardware/software etc.

(I was thinking of samsung because of their software and because this machine came with a samsung 850 Pro, but I have not looked at any other brands so far, and any brands with similar software or drive-management would be considered.)

The psref sheet says the storage supports "M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/s (e.g. xxxGB SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe)"

My usage:
I do use it for graphics-intensive/load-screen-heavy games, but I had not considered the 970 Evo Plus to have been worth the 20$ upgrade over the regular 970 Evo.
I am far more interested in real-world practical results than in lab results, so an extra 1 NS or so of speed means really nothing to me if it is indistinguishable to the average end-user.  As a result, I have tended to ignore PRO versions of Samsung's NVMe drives.
I do sometimes have sustained write times of 100GB or more of files.
I might dual-boot with this drive.

Money is an issue--I won't spring for over $200.  I was thinking more in the $125-150 (on sale) price, and B&H regularly runs up to 20% sales on NVMe drives.  They are also a licensed distributor of Samsung and other brands.

I will not consider a used drive.

Thank you all very much for your help! :-)

Hello microfishd1,

Greetings

For compatible SSD, kindly go to the parts look up site. I've used the model P50 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20EN, if you have a different model, kindly search using your machine's model instead.

It will show you a list of recommended and compatible replacements or upgrade parts

Hope this helps
Stay safe

Re:best NVMe for P50?

Recently I have been trying to different Crucial

models:

2TB Crucial P1. Still in my P51, not a speed monster.

2TB Cruicial P2, send it back today, was in my P50, reason for returing, it can swallow a 300GB disk image in two minutes or less, but if you repeat it a second time or try to image a lager disk NVMe to NVMe the P2 basically loses it around 600GB mark and become unresponsive, extremely slow. Then it needs rest. For normal usage it will be fast, no doubt.

Samsung PM981, PM961, various 512GB, 1TB need 2TB models.

My 2TB 981 is the slowest of the PM disks, maybe its worn out. These were from Lenovo or pulls from Lenovo machines off eBay.

Hence the Samsung brand is extremely reliable for NVMe.

200USD will get you any 1TB disk and Cruicial P2 2TB.

I will probably try HP's EX950 drive next which is around 250 here for 2TB. But why don't you look at 980 pro?

EDIT: EX950 is a double sided drive, might have a problem fitting some thinkpads.

I appreciate this, but I do not want to spend anywhere close to 200 for a SSD.  I was thinking in the $100-$125 range.  The only way I ever considered the 970 evo was that it went on sale to $125ish

Thank you however, for your experiences!

You were asking for BEST,

on a budget I'd go for cruicial P1 if samsung unavailable.

I am typing this from that right now.

Hello,

I have had good results with Intel, Kioxia (formerly Toshiba), Seagate, SK Hynix, and Western Digital NVMe SSDs, as well as Lenovo's own branded drives.

I'm satisfied with my Samsung 970 EVO 1TB. With the exception of a WD SSD, the only SSD/ NVME drives I have used are Samsung. I really would not consider any other brand.

$150 back in 2019. Sure its cheaper now.
