do you need a docking station in order to project your 'desktop' onto an external monitor?

No you can use the side video vga port. I have not tried the HDMI port.

The DVI port on the dock and the DisplayPort (it's not HDMI) on the side are only connected to the ATI video chip.  If you're on the dock, you have to use high-perf graphics (ATI) if you want DVI output.  I'm not sure how the VGA port on the dock works - I'm guessing it's identical to the VGA on the side of the notebook though, in that it is dual-wired and will work with either display mode.  I could be wrong as I haven't tested it.
