how to switch on light above screen on W530?

2014-11-13, 23:12 PM

I replaced my W520 with a W530 and was really looking forward to the backlit keyboard as I work a lot at night.  To my huge dissapointment, it didnt come with it - I assumed such a basic feature would be standard.

I had the W520 for 3 years, and never worked out how to enable that light to see the keyboard.  I notice the W530 has it too. Has anyone figured out how to activate it?  I woudl have assumed it would be one of the funciton keys, but nothing is visible.

Good day.

Check out the two images in this post: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=680454#p680454

Fn+PgUp activates the ThinkLight in *20 systems and prior (see top pic).

How does your W530 keyboard compare to the bottom pic? That one, with the light rays on the spacebar icon pointing upwards, indicates a backlit keyboard and Fn+Spacebar activates it. If what I've read elsewhere is correct, if the light rays on the spacebar icon point downwards, it indicates a ThinkLight. Again, Fn+Spacebar should activate it.

Regards.

From user guide page 24:

• Fn+Spacebar: Control the keyboard backlight and the ThinkLight light.
– Press once: Turn on the keyboard backlight to low brightness level.
– Press again: Adjust the keyboard backlight to high brightness level.
– Press the third time: Turn off the keyboard backlight and turn on the ThinkLight light.
– Press the fourth time: Turn off the ThinkLight light.

You can replace your current keboard with one that's Backlit.  I did that on one of my 2 W530's. Its easy just like adding memory under the keyboard, just take out two screws and disconnect the old keyboard and connect the new one and replace the two screws.  The FRU # is 04x1240, I got mine off Amazon for $61.00.  Now I can chose the Backlight or the Thinklight.
