keyboard issues- capslocks is locked

2009-02-19, 15:24 PM

Hi,

I got w500 about two weeks ago. I am fairly satisfied with the laptop except that almost every day there is a new issue, webcam wireless and now keyboard. First two were actually windows firewall and MSN  problems which were solved by disabling and reinstalling but now it appears like hardward and I dont like this.

So what is happening is simple and very annoying. When I hit the capslock it stays on until I reboot. Not very convenient and somewhat preocupying  since to the best of my knowledge it likely has to do with the keyboard itself and is not a software issue.

Any suggestions?

I have to say that I get weird feeling about the design of this laptop, that is, it does not seem as robust as I would expect from this brand. So if someone can please  tell me that I am missing something obvious I would appreciate.

M

Myrkorr:

I think that the difficulties you are encountering with the caps lock key arise from the settings you have with your operating system (presumably Vista) and they have nothing to do with any problem or deficiency related to the computer.

Go to the "Control Panel", select "Regional and Language Options", then select the tab at the top that says "Keyboards & Languages", then press the button "Change Keyboards".  You will then see two radio buttons that allow you to configure keyboard behaviour so that one of the two options listed below (but not both) turns off the Caps Lock:

1) Pressing Caps Lock a second time, or;

2) Pressing the Shift key.

This little adjustment is buried so deep in the operating system settings I would never have found it if I had gone looking for it...  I happened to trip across it earlier this week and the memory was still fresh in my mind.

Myrkorr, welcome to the forum,

pressing caplocks turns the function on, pressing it again turns it off. Are you saying that you cannot turn it off?

Hope this helps

Andy

Yes of course! I appreciate that we have to ask the obvious questions but yes when I toggle capslock on it stays on regarless of the fact that I try to toggle it off by pressing the key again.

Interestingly, I just went into word after pressing the capslock key and started typing using shift to get lower cases. Word was able to return to the capslock off state.

Actually, I just noticed that as soon as I press shift the capslock go off, that can work for me. I must of missed something along the way but last I checked pressing capslock a 2nd time should turn capslock off.
