mSATA SSD Success! (and info)

2011-08-30, 13:17 PM

I returned a non-functioning Renice 120GB mSATA SSD and replaced it with the Runcore T50 6Gb/s mSATA 120GB SSD.  I wanted to share with the community:

1. I found the best way to install the drive was to use the factory install disks, rather than transfer a disk image (see #2 below)

2. The drive does not like Intel RapidStorage SATA LPM (Link State Power Managment), and this needed to be disabled for the mSATA port (port 2) in the Registry.  The PCI Power Managment setting in BIOS does not solve the problem.  The problem was a nasty 60 second stutter/freeze occuring predictably on Windows installation, boot, and at other unpredicatble times.  Applying the fix prior to any image transfer (Arconis, Windows Image Backup,etc) may be an easier way to go rather than to bear the freezing through a factory install, which I did.

3. I am still trying to set the boot order correctly.  All other boot devices must be deactivated in the BIOS boot priority list for this device to boot  (maybe 1.3 BIOS will help this, but my machine is not RAID-enabled).

4.  This drive is much quicker than an Intel 2nd Generation SSD in the main bay.  I dont think I will benchmark to compare- it is a definite practical improvement in speed (blazing really).

5.  HWINFO indicates that the mSATA port is operating at SATA III speeds, 6Gb/S !!!  (EDITED: Testing by wolfindersteppe reveals that W520 mSATA Operates at SATA II as other posters have suggested.  HWINFO must be reporting the speed capability of the DRIVE not the mSATA PORT speed.)

I cloned my Intel mSATA 80GB SSD using Ghost 15!. Everything aligned properly and it was painless. The only thing that I had to do at the 1st startup was to remove the 500GB HDD so that Windows 7 didn't get confused. I replaced the 500GB HDD after the first shutdown. All my applications are on the SSD with 24.2 GB of free space. Not certain why I would want a larger SSD for my boot drive. The HDD is holding the original boot partition (unused, but there for backup), my data partition (D: ) and my music partition (M: ). Of course, the Lenovo recovery partition (Q: )  is still there as well.

@w520user999

I do not believe that there is a SATA III port for the PCIe slot (only SATA II).  Perhaps HWINFO is reporting something else.

even if the laptop supports sataIII which i think it does, the msata drive needs to be able to handle SATAIII which to my knowledge... no one... SATAII is out there and the only company that might support FULL sataII is runcore with their pro V line

There are 6 SATA ports available on the W520 ( 2 SATA III, 4 SATA II). One SATA III is in the primary HDD bay and the second is in the UltraBay. All the other ports are SATA II.

Dear W520user999, please, please run at least one benchmark with bench32 or AS SSD Benchmark or any other at your convenience and post it here - it would be extremely important for me - still awaiting my delivery :smileytongue:

Any chance you can do a crystaldiskmark on it w520user999  I'd be interested to know what max speed the mini pcie port supports before I buy one.

thanks!
