Re: mSATA SSD Success! (and info)

FINAL PROOF - RunCore Pro V T50 6GB mSATAIII 120GB RCP-V_T50028-MC RUNS IN SATA2 / 3Gb/s ON W520

Dear W520 owners, I have just replaced my existing WWAN card with RunCore mSATA and the final proof is that it is running with SATA2 speed.
The result of comparison RunCore mSATA vs. Vertex3 Pro can be seen here http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/566338-lenovo-w520-owners-thread-455.html#post7932739.
I am downloading now PCMark 7 and PCMarkVantage and will post those test too.

  • Already formatted with NTFS

  • Only SATA2 in MiniPCIe slot BUT to be honest, that has nothing to do with RunCore but with the current limitation in Sandy Bridge and mobile QM67 chipset where only 2 out of 6 ports are operated at SATA3 speed, slot 0 (standard HDD) and slot 1 (CD/DVD or caddy) but not mSATA.

My conclusion is - not suitable for W520 owners while only SATA2 speed in MiniPCIe slot and too expensive for 120GB to be used in slot 0/1, the money would be better invested in larger, 480GB SSD with SATA3 or maybe in the future the successor model to W520 (W530?) would have more SATA3 ports.

@ wolfindersteppe:  Thanks for doing the testing which settles the issue of mSATA speed on W520.  I find the drive to be very fast in every day usage  (WEI of 7.8), faster than the Intel X-25 M 160GB--  the drive I first tried on the machine.

Over the past month it appears the drive is performing flawlessly.  I am having the random shutdown problem, but I dont think this is related to the drive.  I am happy with the purchase of this drive, perhaps because I was 'on the rebound' from a bad Renice experience.

Perhaps your reseller will be as flexible as mine was with returning the Renice drive, and you will be able to exchange your drive for something that works for you!

I have updated first post in order to not confuse or misrepresent mSATA speed on W520
