p14s cpu problem

2020-11-28, 2:11 AM

My brand new P14S generally feels slow. Occasionally when using zoom or chrome it becomes so slow that I cannot move the mous and have to restart it.
I'm using Ubuntu 20.04. My CPU is i7-10610U. I have an NVIDIA gpu and 32GB RAM.
In the kernel log (/var/log/kern.log) I can see cpu throttling warnings. I can see these warnings by using cpufreq app too (https://github.com/konkor/cpufreq).
When I do cpu stress test by using command "sudo stress --cpu 8 --timeout 100s", the cpu does not acheive its max freq of 4.9GHz and instead is around 1.8 or 2 GHz.
According to Geekbench app (https://www.geekbench.com) my single core cpu score is 1000 and multicore score is 2200, which is horrible compared to my two-year old macbook that has a multicore score of 5500.
Does anyone know how I can fix this issue. I have tried reinstalling previous versions of Ubuntu 18.04 but the problem persists.

p14s cpu problem

I have the same exact problem with my P14S. I have updated my BIOS to 1.16 (which just came out), to see if things get any better.

Did the BIOS update improve anything?

I'm having similar issues, where in gaming I get incredible fps drops when it seems quite fine at other times.

I have the same laptop and problems too.

I formatted and put windows on to run all the stuff lenovo support asked me to.

Somehow the machine seemed to perform ok when I went back to linux, until i installed the nvidia driver, then it went back to being throttled at 400mhz.

I removed the nvidia driver and now it sits around 1.6ghz, no where near as good as it was. There's some throttling happening when the nvidia driver is installed and removing it didnt completely fix it, so I think there's a firmware problem happening.

If I could give the laptop back I would, but they haven't "proven" it's faulty yet. Might be my last lenovo sadly.

Hello,

I encounter the same issue with my p14s laptop and Ubuntu 20.04.
I tried to update to latest kernel but the issue persists.

Do you know if there is an update on this subject?

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Hello,

After having tried few things I have updated the BIOS version from 1.13 to 1.16 (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/fr/fr/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/p14s-type-20s4-20s5/20s4/20s4001jfr/pf1wekqg/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS)

And I have no issue anymore :)

Previously the CPU were bounded to something like 600 MHz when using visio like Zoom or Google Meet.

Now I can see clearly that the CPU frequency go up to 4 GHz easly.

Note: I monitor the frequency with the Intel core i7utility (i7z) -> sudo apt install i7z

I am having this problem as well.  Even sent the first notebook I received back to my vendor thinking it was faulty.  Same issue with replacement.  Windows was fully reloaded too.  Latest Bios (1.16).  All drivers up to date.   Computer just randomly "gets slow" and freezes up.  It catches up after a bit but I'm shocked that this is an issue with this newer model.

Very disappointed because this is exactly what I wanted in a notebook for size and features but this freezing might force me to get rid of it.
