Re:p14s cpu problem

2021-03-02, 11:37 AM

I have the same problem.

I figured out the problem is related to the power management system of Windows 10 and nvidia.

It seems that they are conflicting

because if I turn off the Nvidia graphic card at the Device Manager of the Windows, the problem disappears.

But if it is the case why did I spend so much money to buy the portable workstation?

Re:p14s cpu problem

Hello,

I am experiencing the same issue with my P14s - 48Gb of RAM, 2 TB SSD.

When under full load, editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, the laptop throttles down to below 0.7 GHz, which essentially renders it useless.

I have already had it in service and they replaced the motherboard. That did not work. The laptop is exhibiting the same behavior.

I have sent the laptop back in service now and I will be fighting first for a unit replacement and, if that also does not work, for a full refund.

It is beyond unacceptable for a 2500 Euro laptop to behave like that.

P.S. I refuse to apply any botchy Throttle Stop solution. I did not pay that kind of money to have to MacGyver the CPU to work.

I bought P14s last year in Korea and have not noticed this problem because I didn't use it for GPU intensive work.

This semester I am using it to run a robot simulator (CoppeliaSim) and found this problem and I told Lenovo service Korea and they are not giving me a solution yet.

Yes, I think you'd better refund it if it is possible.

I have the same problem but it´s extending to T480s, T490, T490s and P14s. Can´t wait to see response from Lenovo on this issue, it seems that they acknowledged this problem in 2018. I ran LSU and update all drivers and the issue continues.

  • Disabled Nvidia Card.
  • Re installed our internal image.
  • Reproduced it with an off net machine.
  • Update separately BIOS 1.19, LITS 2.0 and Power MGMT 1.67.17.54

If someone has any hint, please let me know.

Re:p14s cpu problem

Hi,

On my side P14s gen 2, when:

- Lenovo intelligent cooling on: CPU power package isn't limited but fan is always in jet mode (fixed on my side with tpfancontrol)

- Lenovo intelligent cooling off: fan is scalling but CPU power package is limited to 5~6W, which kill the perf under load, all the core want all the juice, but not enough juice is available, it's spread to all core that fall at 0.39Ghz, in other words, power limitation

Your issues looks as a power limitation, and I assume you may have disabled Lenovo intelligent cooling for better fan noise

Ensure it is enabled to drop the power limitation (Fn+t or from Lenovo Vantage software)

Optinaly fix fan behavior with tpfancontrol 😁

Can you please share your Tpfancontrol Values for the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen2?

Hi, I'm using the default values of the "smart profile 1", which are (Level are Celsius):

```
Level1=60 0
Level1=65 1
Level1=75 3
Level1=80 7
Level1=90 64
```

I thought to fine tune it at first, but its worked good enought for me that I had forgotten idea 😁
Also, generally switching to BIOS mode (aka jet mode), when I need to do intensive GPU works, to have more aggressive cooling, I've made some benchmark of BIOS vs "smart profile", I've noticed, if I recall correctly around ~5-10% perf lost.
