p51 running Windows Basic Driver

2019-12-07, 2:35 AM

Dear Lenovo Community,

How is the next generation P53?

My p51 is stuck running graphics through the Basic Windows Driver (Intel P630) since September but likely earlier. I updated the Quadro M2200 to the 11.19 Drivers (440) and all of the updates from the Lenovo p51 driver page. I'm getting the graphics driver upon reboot, then at lock-screen, I'll log in, and the screen will flash to black, back and forth. I'll get an update error about Running Windows Basic Driver.

I've got a warranty, so Lenovo said to send it in. I think something needs to be updated.

Regards,

Mr. iShuldBStudying

In your screenshots, it looks like the Nvidia driver is installed and working. It is not clear what error exactly you are seeing. Might help if you took a screenshot of the error. And what problems you have, besides the error message.

The error under Device Manager is Windows code #43.

The general warning under the Device Manager -> Display Adapters -> Quadro M2200 (And Intel P630)  -> Properties is"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)".

Some other problems involve running Skype; the Camera doesn't work; there is no Pantone Color Check change, the color depth, bit-sample on my beautiful HDR background is less than stellar. Using Adobe Photoshop to merge panoramics, adjust layers, or "Brush" is not easy; if anything, the computer has to cook for a second before displaying changes. There are several WIndows functions I used to use that now are broken, including NightTime Screen mode (a slightly orange hue to the screen), brightness.

Luminar just doesn't run anymore too. (A photo editing program).

Hi!
I'm somewhat sure your issue is linked to the display driver, but I think more information would be useful :

What is the Windows 10 version? 1803? 1809? 1903? 1909?

Is your system's graphics hybrid? If so, could it be a bug with the Intel graphics driver?

Look up how to uninstall graphics drivers and uninstall the nVidia one (use the delete option). Reboot, and use Lenovo Vantage to reinstall it.

Good success!
Martin

You can use DDU to cleanly remove display drivers in order to prevent issues that may come up otherwise. In the following thread, I explained how to do that. Of course, you would need to download drivers for your specific device but otherwise the procedure is identical. Please note that it is essential to disconnect your computer from the network until you complete the procedure. If you don't do that, it will pull drivers from Windows Update and these drivers may not work properly on your computer.

Hi!
I wouldn't use DDU as a first step. I would use standard, officially supported methods like Device Manager and Add/Remove programs.

Programs like Display Driver Uninstaller should be reserved for cases where other standard techniques have failed and you are looking at a Windows reinstall.

The first step should be removal in Device Manager, then run the uninstaller, reboot, and reinstall the drivers with Lenovo Vantage or a pre-downloaded driver. Going DDU adds variables instead of removing some.

My computer tech point of view,
Martin

@ve2mrx I get what you're saying but I've never seen DDU fail or do anything nasty. On the other hand, the "normal" ways to uninstall GPU drivers do fail a lot. So that's an easy choice for me. YMMV

Again, I agree, as I've used the tool in the past. I simply believe it should be kept for later troubleshooting.

When I am dealing with a support request, I want to use tools uniformly so the results and expectations can be compared. I doubt Lenovo uses DDU, so the result cannot be compared with in-house results. Bugs no longer can be directly related to the standard system image after DDU. From there, doubt about a system damaged by un-standard tools comes up and could lead to an un-needed OS reinstall.

I prefer to let the standard tools fail, and keep such non-standard tools for "nothing to lose" scenarios. They can work, but sometimes such non-standard tools cause issues hard to fix later. I've seen such damage in the past and decided to stick to proven, well-known methods as sometimes the issues crop up only months later.

A bit like the airplane engine replacement methods developed by some airlines to save time that later caused crashes.

Of course, I am not the person responsible to support the OP's machine, so he is free to follow my advice or not.
