"1TB SSD PCIe-NVMe" specifications for Thinkpad P50

2016-04-11, 22:55 PM

I'm looking at buying a new Lenovo P50 with a SSD configuration.  I see an option for a "1TB SSD PCIe-NVMe" which came out only a few days ago ...does anybody here know the specs of that drive in terms of read/write speeds (megabytes per second)?

That's Samsung 1T PM961 which becomes available in OEM since last december. Read and write speeds are faster than the current SM961 and 950 Pro.

You may see a difference with benchmarking programs but I seriously doubt you will notice the difference in real world use. Here are my results with 2 of the 512gb drives in raid 0 with a little tweaking. I honestly haven't been able to tell the difference in how it's running now and how it was running before except with benchmarks. I guess it's good for bragging rights but essentialy has little value otherwise.

Thank you so much for your reply.  Are you certain it's really a PM961?  I have some doubts which I hope you'll excuse me but it's just that the info I am getting from different sources doesn't line up well.

PM961 became available last December?  The 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD only became available as an option from Lenovo's website just few days ago.  Also, Samsung announced the existence of PM961 around March 22, 2016 during the annual SSD Forum in Japan and they said it will not be available to OEM until the second half of the 2016.

So I was quite (but very pleasantly) surprised that a 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD suddenly became available.  Bottomline, I just want to be sure that the 1TB ssd being offered has really fast read/write speed for me to justify the huge price tag.  I really hope it is a PM961!

Are those benchmarks from 950 Pro?

I like the 950 Pro numbers but maximum 512GB is not going to cut it for me unfortunately so I have been looking for a 1TB capacity.

I like the 950 Pro numbers but maximum 512GB is not going to cut it for me unfortunately so I have been looking for a 1TB capacity.

The numbers shown must surely be indicative of the RAID0 configuration, as opposed to performance of the 950 Pro standalone.  I have two of them in my P70 in non-RAID 2x512GB arrangement, and they perform as follows (which is essentially consistent with pretty much all of the online tests I've seen, which I guess must obviously have not been RAID).  I think 2500MB/s read and 1500MB/s write is what the actual Samsung 950 Pro NVMe product specs show.

I also have a separate 850 Pro (512GB in my story, but I could have gone larger here if I'd wanted to) SATA3 SSD in the primary 2.5" bay to add yet one more chunk of storage, thus giving me a total of 3x512GB. non-RAID.  Of course the 850 Pro is "much slower" than the 950 Pro NVMe per the Samung 850 Pro product specs.

Even so, the P70 is a considerable step up for me and my modest needs, tripling the storage of my beloved W530 with its single 512GB 840 Pro SSD.

Yep, I agree... the numbers so impressive it has to be from a raid 0.

Thanks for sharing and comparing your benchmarks SPerber!

PM961 for sure. Microsoft received the first batch since last December and it has been available in grey market since then.

0 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too
