random power offs on P1 Gen 2

2021-02-05, 17:26 PM

This week, I have started having system power offs -- not crashes or BSODs -- straight power off. I have all updates installed for Windows. I manually checked and installed all updates from Lenovo's support page for my system. I'm noticing with the latest updates from Lenovo (over the past couple of weeks), my system is running hotter and is less stable.

Is anyone else running into power offs, and any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello rehsd,

Greetings!

Have you updated the BIOS thru the support site?

Any other changes that you've made on the computer?

Try running diagnostics

Update us how it goes

I have the latest BIOS (1.37).

I have made no physical changes to the system. Regular updates for Windows, Office, and Lenovo are about it.

I will run diagnostics this weekend. There have been many updates from Lenovo that have been installed over the past couple of weeks, and I have a gut feeling one of them is causing the issue.

I have exactly the same problem with my new P15v Gen1. Power off without any BSOD... nothing in the eventviewer othere than System was powerd off unexpected...

Bios, driver, etc all up2date and run all the Vantage diagnostics without issues...

Further I expierience short Windows freezes of 2-3 seconds several times over the day.

Laptop has warranty. Who can help?

For me, I'm wondering if it's thermal related. I've noticed my laptop is running much hotter (I always have HWinfo showing CPU temps in my system tray). Maybe the latest thermal management update is running the laptop too hot and it's a thermal protection shutdown. Right now, running idle, my CPU is at 50C (which seems fine). If I join a Teams meeting where I'm sharing my webcam, my temps are 80C to 100C. Max temp shown in HWinfo is 102C for the CPU. This is cooking.

I disabled the integrated GPU and am now running the discrete GPU only. I also changed the power plan to Balanced Mode (instead of Performance). It is running much cooler now. This seems to support it's a thermal control issue. I'll keep an eye out for updated thermal and power management drivers from Lenovo.

I still have sudden power off and 2-3s freezes. I believe this must be a HW issue. Any ideas what I could check? There is no event other than "The system was powerd off unexpected". There is no indication before that event.

You could keep an eye on thermals. I use HWinfo and then add CPU and GPU temps as icons in my system tray. That way, I can see when things are getting warm. You can look for a correlation in shutdowns with temperatures. Also, run a hardware test from Lenovo Vantage.
