Re:random power offs on P1 Gen 2

Had another abrupt shutdown today. It happened as I plugged an external HDMI monitor into my laptop. GPU drivers, or hardware issue?

I'm going to try the newer drivers from NVIDIA directly.

The system shut down again. The issue seems worse when I have an external monitor connected (two different sets of monitors & cables).

Yet another shutdown... this time with no external monitor. So... I am seeing no pattern. I just installed the latest Windows updates (and have all Lenovo updates already). If it does it again, I'll open a support ticket -- likely a hardware issue. :(

Re:random power offs on P1 Gen 2

I've been having similar issues - complete system crashes reliably a couple times a day, but only when connected to a dock and only when the computer has the monitors in sleep mode.  For me it's a crash (system crashes and reboots back to a login screen).  This happens using both a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 and also happens on a Dell USB3.0 dock.

Complete crash, no BSOD, connected to power adapter and minimal info in event logs.  I even ran a thermal logger and doesn't appear to be getting CPU temp too high in my case. I'm on a p1 gen 2 with Quadro T2000.

Are you using a dock, notice any difference when not using a dock or externally connected monitors?

If I use the computer not connected to a dock it's fine, nice and stable, so it seems thunderbolt or GPU related possibly.  The issue started around 12/2020 for me around the same time as a graphics driver update was issues, but not 100% sure that was it.  I've since updated to the newer 27.21.14.5266 GPU driver to no avail.
NVIDIA Driver(Windows 10 Version 1803 or Later) - 10 [64] - 27.21.14.5256

I generally keep the rest of the BIOS and drivers up to date as per Vantage and can't seem to figure out what's causing this. Figured I'd see if you have noticed any patterns in your situations as well.

I'm not using a dock.

I'm now running the latest NVIDIA drivers, directly from NVIDIA.

Digging through Windows event logs, I found some odd crashes related to the integrated Intel video chipset (even though it's disabled in BIOS). I used DDU to clean out all the Intel-related video drivers. I also updated Windows 10 with the recent releases from Microsoft. I have not had a crash since, but I likely haven't tested long enough.

I will continue to monitor and test.

Hello rehsd,

Have you run hardware diagnostics thru BIOS?

Also try to load the BIOS defaults then save and exit

I have not run diagnostics from the BIOS, but I can look for that option and try it. I have reset BIOS to defaults.

I have used diagnostics in Lenovo Vantage; it passes fine. I have also stressed the discrete GPU with 3DMark and the CPU with Cinebench R23; both complete just fine.

I have had no issues today.

I ran the Diagnostics UEFI. I chose the full set of tests (>8 hours to run). Everything passed (no errors). The only warning was related to the battery.

Re:random power offs on P1 Gen 2

Hello rehsd,

The issue could be caused by hardware.

You might want to try to reset the computer to factory state, to rule out OS/software issues, however based on our trail and error tests, most likely it's the machine's physical components.

Possible points of failure are battery, power supply or motherboard.
I suggest that you reach out to hardware tech support

Best regards,
