w500 choices

2009-02-03, 18:43 PM

I have the choice between two w500 configurations.. One has xp 64 and 4 gigs of ram and the other vista bus 64 and 4 gigs of ram.. I haven't used vista yet, but obviously have used xp.. Both machines are the same price..

Do I stay away from vista and stick with xp, or is vista worth trying??

Cheers,

Dion

I would recommend going with Vista.  Windows 7 is the next version of windows coming out in less then a year and is supposedly very similiar to Vista..  By getting Vista you should get ahead on the learning curve if you decide you are going to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out.

From what I hear Windows 7 will be worth upgrading to which is why I recommended Vista.

Are you sure that the other machine has 64-bit version of XP on it? Lenovo doesn't support that version and driver issues are imminent...

Not that I'm crazy about Vista...but at least you'll have proper driver support.

George

Ajkula66, you are right, they don't support the xp64.. I got from bad info from the vendor that has the xp w500 on sale!! So, basically I am choosing between a w500 with xp32 bit,4 gigs of RAM,and turbo memory at 2 gig versus a w500 with vista bus 64 bit, 4 gigs of RAM and no Turbo memory.. I mention the turbo memory because that is the only other feature that one has over the other..

The vista w500 is $2554 tax included and the xp w500 is $2502 tax included..

Still trying to decide..

Correction, the vista w500 is $2425, so is cheaper than the xp w500 at $2502

Turbo memory is NOT supported by XP, you'll have to disable it.

Personally, I'd go with Vista...although I'm not crazy about it whatsoever. 64-bit OS is the way to go in today's day and age IMHO...

Good luck.
