Re: Qualcomm WAN not working

hi all,

thats are the new's in my case: until my last post, lenovo did the following:

a) lenovo has no idea, where the problem resides. so they wan't to change parts between an working W510 and the non working one. the lenovo technican was comming an changing.... he was about 4-5 hours in my office an worked...the result at the end of the day: both notebooks are not working any longer (exactly: the WWAN card wasn't working in any device) because we had no longer time, we didn't built the mainboard back in to the other W510.

b) some days later: lenovo did an 'golden change'. they changed the motherboard & WWAN card at one time. this helped nothing.

c) some days later: the technican was comming again with an new motherboard. he also got an 'actionplan' from lenovo. he had to change the motherboard, power on the notebook without the internal display connected, installing the new drivers (version 1.1.170 from 28.10.2010) and then he has to connect the internal display & WWAN antennas. but this did'nt helped. the new motherboard in have now, seems to me to be an defect part. because my device has now a little strange behavior. (slowly, a lot of HDD activity, "self power on" when the notebook is in standby, very low battry running-time, etc....but that another thing.

i don't know, what the next thing is. lenovo said to me, they are knowing about the problem (the acknowleged, that this problem exists) and they wan't to resolve the problem with our devices.....

in my case, the new WWAN card driver didn't helped. is there anyone, the new driver resolved the problem?

Yes! After half a year it finally seems to work (on both, Windows and Linux)! :)

(Let's wait for the field tests instead of judging it too early, though.)

Anyway, I'd already like to thank JameZ and Cleo for keeping us up-to-date and for passing our reports to the engineers! :)

PS: I still don't quite get what that boot code utility is about. Do I need it? If so, what for?

@alram,

Could you ask the service person to remove the Gobi WWAN card and see if issue still persist?

@codethief,

The boot code utility seems like a firmware update for the Gobi WWAN card itself.

Also please take note below.

Attention: Do not turn off, restart, suspend or hibernate the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE QUALCOM GOBI2000 CARD MAY BE DAMAGED and no longer be detected by the computer.

@JameZ: Interestingly, the boot code utility cannot be found at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74582 ?

Thanks but you got me wrong. :) I was just saying that there's absolutely no link to that update on the main or the WWAN driver update page which means noone will find it.

Re: Qualcomm WAN not working

JameZ, and anybody else with interest;

I have been watching this forum for months, having the same problems as everyone else, I figured it would be redundant to repeat the mantra.

Anyway, I have a w510 4389-2UU with 8gb of ram and Win 7 64bit.

Before this new driver fix, if i were to put the sim card in my system it would cause my touch screen to go crazy, like somebody using multiple fingers, dragging all over the screen.

In addition I had the same problems as everybody else, half the time on boot up under device manager I would have an unknown device instead of the gobi2000. Only with the sim card in did the screen go wacko.

Now after the update: After installing the new driver, then the boot code, I rebooted, only to find unknown device again. I then rebooted again and reinstalled the new driver.

I then fiddled with the settings and had to turn of wifi in order for gobi to turn on. Once on, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO CONNECT TO ATT! WOW

However, my screen went wacko...... ugh...

I did find that if I turn off the gobi, that my screen goes normal and the pointer gets back to my control.. Nothing like fighting for control with a machine.

So this ought to be a good one.. What is it about the sim inside the gobi that is causing a conflict with the screen?

Please advise, more than happy to try whatever you suggest.

Curious if anybody will have this issue now that the modem works?

Thanks,

Jasen

@codethief
thanks for the link to the boot code utility. i didn't know, that this utility exists. i tried it, but it also doesn't change anything.

@JameZ:
i dismounted the WWAN Card, but the strange behavior of the devices doesn't change. i switched to our backup notebook. lenovo should repair the one ...

@alram: You're welcome. However, I have to give credit to JameZ who hid the link in his announcement very well. ;) Anyway, as I said I haven't notice a difference since the installation, either. And by "no difference" I mean: It still works! (I still cannot believe I'm saying this right now.)
