w510 bios update gone bad -- help please

2011-04-24, 15:16 PM

Just went through a montly (+/-) update process through System Update.

Updated BIOS in my W510... along with a host of other things.. but from what I've

read i fear its the bios.

all went normally (as it always has).. machine rebooted after update.. stopped at the thinkpad

splash screen.  Just hung there.  I left it all day (figured it was doing something?) came back

at night, it was still hung.

tried to force reboot.. i got two beeps.. then three beeps..   nothing happened.

every time i pressed power button.. two beeps.. pause.. three beeps.

took out batt / restared .. no screen.. HD spins / fan spins / power light is on.. but machine

seems dead.

Anyone have any ideas whats going on?  how to fix?  was it the bios update?  can it be rolled back?

Thanks in advance

You'll want to download your Hardware Maintenance Manual and look on page 57 where it lists the "Beep symptoms." What you're describing doesn't quite match any of what's listed, though. You don't have any numbers on the screen, right?

Were you trying to use http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-74858 ???

If so, we bricked several machines at the beginning of April and asked Lenovo to remove the update.  I see that hasn't been done.  Maybe now they will.

I did check the manual but I found no matches for the beeps.  No number.. at least none that I noticed.

It won't come back to life for me to check again.

Are you folks telling me my W510 is toast?  Can I get in there with an old BIOS image on CD or USB?

You should determine that with Lenovo Support.  All of the machines this was attempted on here were truly bricked and had motherboard replacements.

Thanks Thor, I'll call them asap.

I don't mean to sound flip, but this has to be the most unbelievable (and unresponsible) thing I've ever seen in the

world of computing.

Doesn't this mean that anyone with Toolbox installed that runs and auto updated is going to potentially kill their box?

Again, unbelievable.

update bios using lenovo update utility sometime kills a motherboard and you need to replace it in a service. next time use a selfbootable bios update utility from lenovo web-site.

Stas.

Yeah, this is why I'm simply not updating my BIOS. I'm too **bleep** scared. If Lenovo maintains links to a BIOS update that kills your machine, I can't trust them. It's not hard to delete a bad link or improve the system to someone doesn't have this happen to them. But Lenovo obviously hasn't done anything to fix the issue. So my BIOS will probably go unupdated until I get rid of the machine. All thanks to Lenovo's crappy update service.

I can tell you from experience that no matter how you do the bios update, it's possible to brick your system board.

I'm about to go out of service on my W510 and am counting down the seconds before I get my new Dell. I pity the poor fool that ends up with this heap of junk that has sucked days of my life out of over the past year. And I'm pretty sure the local lenovo support guys can't wait for this to get out of warranty either.
