Re: w510 bios update gone bad -- help please

2011-04-28, 18:27 PM

Sounds to me like the only option is to replace the motherboard?

Send it in for service, anyway.

Had an absurd call with support (I have 3 year onsite).. the insisted that the info on

the back of my machine was not sufficient.. that the "machine type" (CTO) meant nothing to them..

and that I had to find the correct 3 digit machine type in order for them to proceed with my case.

they told me it would appear on both my quote and on the original packaging.. well its not on my quote..

and god knows where the original packaging is.

They also gave me the genius option of "looking it up in my bios".

uhm.. machine is dead.

Your serial number should be sufficient.

What they are probably looking for is the 7 character product number (looks like 2668-KHU) and the S/N (looks like 12-34AB5). It's on the back sticker:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-49QTT6.html

Above information should be sufficient, report back if they sill insist on something else.

Re: w510 bios update gone bad -- help please

well a tech came out and swapped my MB.
The W510 now says "Invalid Model Type" "UUID Invalid"
Something to that effect. He says all i have to do is update
the bios. (!)

in his defense we didn't have inet access at the time and his
ISO disc wouldn't read.

so, can anyone suggest what the SAFEST most up to date
BIOS is? (or another way to fix this issue) machine seems
to run fine.. it goes to windows and all is normal.. except for
the error display on boot.

I just went through the Bios (Flash update).  It bricked my mother board.  I work at a university.  We took it over to IT-Repair and they confirmed the mother board was bricked and that it was due to an error in the bios update.

What method did you use to brick your machine?  The .EXE install or did you download the .ISO and burn a CD?

PS: Lenovo strongly suggests rebooting the system before applying the BIOS update.

(I don't have a CD drive, so I use the .exe BIOS Update Utility. I follow the rule above and never had any problems.)

w510 is nothing but problems on all forums in all sections  I have two machines one is bricked by exe Bios update that was part of the system update on my restore discs and it has gone all wrong when i allowed it to do its job MAKING COMPUTER PERFORM BETTER! I hate the fact that I lost time with this model  and wish Lenovo did a recall instead of this nonsence people having.  its good that i can finish some work on my other w510 but I can feel its breathing hard.
