w540 WiFi Issues

2021-01-03, 21:32 PM

Having issues with my Wifi! It does not disconnect from my network, but after waking it up from sleep, it will load a page just fine to start, but if I then click a link or something, it will try to go there but the give me an error saying "No internet connection". If I disconnect then reconnect to the Wifi, it's fine! First I call xFinity and upgraded my modem. Didn't help. I've tried "forgetting" the network and redoing it. Didn't help. I set up Vantage and went through that whole update process. Didn't help. Paid the $30 thing on Vantage that "automatically" scans for issues and fixes them. Didn't help. Any ideas? Do I need to replace the Wifi board/card to something else? If so, what should I buy. I'm hardware savvy, but not software/computer savvy. I do follow directions well though. Hoping someone can help before the thing gets thrown out my window!

Hello,

I do not have a ThinkPad W540 myself, nor do I know which version of Windows you are running, but if you open the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), go to Network Adapters and view its properties, do you see a tab named Power Management?  If so, try going to that tab an un-checking (de-selecting) the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.

After that is disabled, is there any change in behavior?

Windows 10 Pro is what I've got. Turning that off, mad it worse. It completely disconnects it from the Wifi. Anytime I "wake up" the computer, I have to reconnect to the wifi.

Hello,

Try toggling it back to the original setting.  Does that improve things at all?

Tried it, same thing. If it's off, it disconnects from the internet. If it's on, it says it's connected but I have to constantly toggle the wifi on then off frequently. I also tried adjusting the power settings as mentioned on the Microsoft boards. Nothing helps. All my drivers are up to date. Do you think this is a wifi card (hardware) issue at this point? Do you know if there is a certain thing I need to find to be compatible or just anything with windows 10 64 bit compatibility? The computer works great other than the wifi issue. It's crazy fast, screen is good, battery life is good. Just this wifi issue and I've had it. I sell online and the wifi problems make my job harder!
