[w540] "Display Driver stopped responding" repeatedly

2016-02-15, 17:25 PM

This has just started happening for the past few weeks now.

Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered

Display driver Intel HD Graphics Drivers for Windows 8(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I believe the issue is coming from Chrome as I have attempted to set a tdrDelay in regedit. When I did so I was still getting the same issue but the error message changed.

Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware.

Application chrome.exe has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware.

I haven't been having this issue with my computer at work, although that is a desktop with Win 7 and way different specs.

My Intel graphics driver is 10.18.15.4256 which is considered "up to date" when I do "search automatically..." in device manager. I also don't see anything newer on Lenovo's site.

I tried to install 15.40.10.64.4300 from Intel but I'm getting an error.

The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.

Model: Lenovo Thinkpad w540

OS: Windows 10 Pro

Processor: Intel i7-4800MQ

Graphic Cards: Intel HD Graphics 4600, Nvidia Quadro K2100M

Intel Graphics Driver Version: 10.18.15.4256

2nd Monitor: Acer S231HL

Chrome version: 48.0.2564.109 m

Things I have done:

  • Reformatted computer
  • Checked drivers were all up to date
  • Create tdrDelay under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers in REGEDIT and set to value of 8
  • Update BIOS

You should be installing the Optimus drivers:

I tried downloading the .exe from that and it installed a DRIVERS folder on my C. I navigated to DRIVERS/WIN/VIDEO/INTEL and ran the Setup.exe. It installed, restarted computer but when I checked my driver version I still have 10.18.15.4256 which is apparently the correct and most up to date version listed on that page.

Re: [w540] "Display Driver stopped responding" repeatedly

Currently there is no way to get things to work.

This hell started after Windows 8.1 came out.

I am currently running on Windows 10 64bit and it is still broken.

Things I have tried and have not worked:

Windows 8.0(working)  upgrade to Windows 10 (broken).

Windows 8.0(working) upgrade to Windows 8.1 (broken).

Windows 8.1 clean install with all drivers from lenovo support page (broken)

Windows 8.1 clean install with all drivers from Windows Update (broken)

Windows 8.1 clean install with dissasembeled drivers from nvidia and intel (broken)

Windows 8.0(working) upgrade to Windows 8.1(broken) upgrade to Windows 10(broken)

Windows 10 clean install with all drivers from lenovo support page (broken)

Windows 10 clean install with all drivers from Windows Update (broken)

Windows 10 clean install with dissasembeled drivers from nvidia and intel. (broken)

I have tried this with every single BIOS update released to date.

I have tried different DRAM configurations.

Tried a different hardrive.

With battery connected/disconnected.

The drivers are just broken and that is the truth currently.

All hardware checks are OK.

Works wonderfully with bundled windows 8.0. As soon as you install updates from Windows updates without even upgrading to 8.1 the system becomes an useless iBrick.

Disabling intel card from Device manager reportedly seems to help some guys...

Well not me.

You are lucky when you acutally can see video output on external monitor. I have managed to get into a state where i could not even see bios bootup on laptop or external displays.

I have had this laptop since it came out and honestly everyday i think of throwing it under a bus.

Luckily i still have my W500 with C2D for the times my W540 decides to mess with display outputs.

And that happens about 10 times a day...

P.S If someone from lenovo would like me to run some tests or send me an alpha version of bios I am more than happy to run it.

Re: [w540] "Display Driver stopped responding" repeatedly

I'm having the same issue with Intel HD Graphics (using Windows 10)

So i decided to use the Nvidia Quadro K2100M as default.

This worked for me as the message

"Display driver Intel HD Graphics Drivers for Windows 8(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

stopped popping up.

But since about 10 days (around 03/14/2016) my graphics card seems to have performance issues.

When adjusting window size it takes longer to properly display it again and in games im having way lower fps (using the same settings as before)

Model: Lenovo Thinkpad w540

OS: Windows 10 Pro

Processor: Intel i7-4800MQ

Graphic Cards: Intel HD Graphics 4600, Nvidia Quadro K2100M

Intel Graphics Driver Version: 10.18.15.4256

Nvidia Driver Version: 10.18.13.5445

Things I've done:

recovered computer (from discs)

updated all drivers using lenovo update center

installed Optimus drivers (as suggested in the thread)

updated BIOS

is anyone else having this issue or knows how to fix this?

Re: [w540] "Display Driver stopped responding" repeatedly

I'm having this problem on my Lenovo W540 running on Windows 10 Pro as well, and it's making it difficult to work.  I tried installing the "Optimus drivers" as was suggested, but that did not work.

After running the suggested "Optimus Drivers" installation, the driver verison listed for my display card "Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600" remains the same and is stil at version 10.18.15.4256 and dated 7/17/2015, as shown in device manager.

Has anyone had luck fixing the issue?  Can we get an official response on this?

UPDATE

Last night I installed the "ThinkPad Video Features" BETA drivers  for Windows 10 BETA from Lenovo, and so far my display driver hasn't crashed (fingers crossed) since then.  I think this is a fix, but keep in mind it is a BETA version:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds102364

Driver Title:  ThinkPad Video Features

File Name:  win10beta_gjdm04ww.zip

I'll repost a few days from now to confirm that it worked.
