200GB 7200rpm hard drive installation issue

Hi All,

Simple question, why can I not install a 200 GB 7200 rpm HD on my W500?

I see it in the BIOS as recognized; it also passed the HDD diagnostic test.

When I run my original XP (not from Lenovo) installation CD I get a BSOD,
stating check computer for virus, seated HDD, correct configuration and
termination...as much as I can remember.

Any help will be appreciate.

purple_heart77, welcome to the forum,

simple question, simple answer   WinXP doesn't have the necessary S-ATA drivers required to recognise and install your hard drive. You need to go intothe BIOS Config menu and set S-ATA from AHCI to Compatible Mode. See this site and please ensure that you scroll down to the installation instructions, especially those for if you don't have a diskette drive.

Again, many thanks for your help. I got a clean install of XP on my 200GB HDD. This way of doing it was odd as all I had to do was swap out HDD from my old Dell and away I went.

One other question if you may, can I make a ghost image of my original 160 GB HDD and install it on the 200 GB HDD?

Does the 200 HD need to have the same sized partition as the 160 GB preload C:?
