2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Can't get anywhere - HDD or System?

Ok, so my wife shot herself in the foot and dropped, then fell on her W520.  Now, it tries to come up but

get's the 2100 message.  I can get to the "boot menu" with the following two options:

ATAPI CD0: HL-DT-STDVDRAM GT33N
PCI LAN: IBA GE Slot 00C8 v1366

Hitting enter with the ATAPC line highlighted   = no action

Hitting enter with the PCI LAN line highlighted =
Initializing INTEL boot agent GE 1.3.66 then:
PXE-E61 Media test failure - check cable
PXE-M0F Exitting Intel Boot Manager

The DIAGNOSTICS Splash Screen shows this:

Phoenix SecureCore Tiano(TM) for ThinkPad

Build Time: 07/26/2013
CPU = Intel(r) Core(TM) i7-2720QM CPU @ 2.2GHz
8192 MB System RAM Passed
256 KB L2 Cache
System BIOS shadowed
Video BIOS shadowed
BIOS Version: 8BET62WW

I've unplugged the power and pulled the battery. Re-seated both the RAM and Harddrive. No affect.

Hitting F1, F8 and F12 and thinkvantage buttons do nothing on rebooting.

Opinions on if it's worth fixing?

Re: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Can't get anywhere - HDD or System?

Hello,

It sounds like the system may have been damaged enough that (1) the HDD is no longer making contact with the SATA connector; or (2) the HDD itself was damaged.  Since the machine is booting up and displaying text on the screen, the CPU and RAM are still inserted correctly.

Do you have another HDD you can temporarily install and load an operating system onto to see if that works?  If it does, then I'd consider the old HDD suspect.

Regards,

Thanks Serene - She'll be fine - in time. The mental bruises will probably outlast the physical ones. Smiley Wink

Re: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Can't get anywhere - HDD or System?

Thanks Aryeh,  Unfortunately no, I got rid of all of my old HDDs Smiley Sad    I thought about pulling the HDD out of my T530 and putting it into hers to see if it would boot but I'm leary to do that in case there is something fried on the mother board and it fries my HDD, then I'D be cranky. Smiley Wink   The connection on both her HDD and the connector that it plugs into look ok but looks can be decieving.

I'm not sure it's worth buying a new HDD on just the chance that it's the problem.

Re: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Can't get anywhere - HDD or System?

The W Series is quite resilient. My W520 "Survived" a meeting with a cement floor from 3 feet up with only a cracked screen, and dead hard drive.

The hard drive is the weakest part of the system, and if it was running when it was dropped, then I would suspect the drive has failed, and not a damaged motherboard.

Your T530 drive should work fine, but I wouldn't attempt to boot the OS unless it was non windows, since the chipset is newer in the T530. (It turns into quite a pain)

Re: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Can't get anywhere - HDD or System?

Thanks - I've been putzing with it some more this morning and was able to get into the BIOS with F1 and everything looks ok there so I'm leaning toward a HDD fail.

I have a complete Rescue and Recovery backup on an external Buffalo hard drive. If it is only the HDD and I go get a new HDD and then try to do the R&R Restore, do you think that would work and bring back the operating system with it?  Assuming of course that it recognizes the external drive connected via ethernet.

It should recognize the ethernet drive. not sure how win PE does with ethernet.

Re: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Can't get anywhere - HDD or System?

Well, we'll see. Smiley Wink  She was having a virtual cow so I went and got a new HDD put it in and it *looks* like R&R is bringing the stuff back from the NAS drive.   I did hardwire the W520 directly to the router.  Fingers crossed - will report back.   They had a 460GB SDD there for $160 that I  would have gotten for her if I was confident that the system would restore.... oh well.
