Advice ThinkPad P52 upgrade options?

2018-08-22, 17:12 PM

My First ThinkpPad - able to aquire P52 in USA shortly after release but resources limited me to base model 8GB RAM and spinning metal HD 7500rpm 1TB

More resources have become available...

Would like to upgrade and see that both are user servicable - would like to retain HD and add m.2 nvme ssd - should I stick with Samsung from Lenovo or is any M.2 matching device suitable? does P52 have 4 channels? Would I get better value with 960 EVO or can my laptop take advantage of 970 PRO and do they get hot?

Ditto RAM upgrade any 8GB 2400 SoDIMM will suffice or do I need to match?

Intrigued that Thinkpad P52 comes with a drainage hole for keyboard spills and user servicable keyboard! (I have come from the world of Mac Books)

Many thanks

Spec sheet:

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20P52/ThinkPad_P52_Platform_Specifications.pdf

Any memory matching spec is fine.

You have two m.2 2280 pci/e 3x4 slots.

Any vendor selling part matching spec should be fine. Order with money back guarantee.

SSD shopping list:

Thanks,

Succesfully installed WD Black WDS500G2X0C 500GB NVMe SSD (was plsd to see P52 comes with retaining screws)

If can get a duplicate SSD later I should be able to raid 0 stripe them?

Just got the same laptop and am looking forward to doing the same. How's the laptop's performance so far? Also, do you keep the HDD inside the laptop too? Sorry if it's dumb to ask that but I've never done this before
