Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

So the W540 is throttling just like the W510/520/530, why is anyone surprised? Lenovo can't manage to make mobile workstations anymore, look elsewhere, unless compromised performance is good enough for you.

Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

Nothing but issues... among many errors or warnings in the Event Viewer, under Administrative Events:

=============================================================================

The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

The speed of processor 1 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

=============================================================================

The above is repeated for all "Processor"  2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Okay, that appears to confirm that it is a firmware issue rather than a hardware limitation. :-)

Thanks for the information!

Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

I'm not sure.  Look in your MS Window "Event Viewer", and see if you have the same error.  I've not looked at the BIOS yet, maybe there is something there we need to know about.

Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

It's not necessarily a firmware issue because the firmware is doing its job to protect the system when it runs hot. The problem is that the heat isn't being dissipated properly.

Has anyone here tried repasting?

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

I doubt heat is the problem since cpu never exceeded 85 which is far from the max allowed in specs. It might have to do with a limit on wattage.

Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

To me it seems obvious, Lenovo decided that the system should not exceed 85C, and I agree, it is a good target peak temp. But they also decided that throttling the system is cheaper then making a proper cooler, and that paper spacs are more important then real world performance. So they didn't just put a more energy efficient GPU in there, that would make the W540 look slow compared to HP or Dell offerings.

It is a limit on wattage (or incorrectly calculated wattage).

I am already throttled at 79C.

And since XTU bug is not fixed, my settings keep resetting every reboot, so I can't do much about that myself.

Re: All W540s have a performance throttling issue

I can make my W510 throttle at low temps as well, all it requires is a poorly fitted cooler.

Umm, it doesn't make much sense. How does it determine that your cooler is "poorly fitted"?
