Black Screen on start up

2018-05-14, 1:50 AM

Hello,

I have a Thinkpad P50 running windows 10 pro. I have had my laptop for over a year and suddenly, every time I try to turn on my laptop, I only see a black screen. The only way I can turn it on is if I do a full shutdown and then boot up afterwards. I have looked at many forums and have run the lenovo diagnostics and cannot find a solution. My windows is up to date as well. When I am at the black screen I can close my laptop and open it up again and then the lock screen appears for about 2 seconds or so. I have also tried booting with no battery with only the charger. No luck so far...

Thanks for any help in advance

So, you were right about windows being the issue. The F1 key did not work, but I went to my settings and went back to the previous version of Windows. I appreciate all of the help!

In the control panel/power, select the option on the left to choose what the power buttons do.  Select "change settings that are currently unavailable".  Turn off fast startup.

Unfortunately this did not work... Now when I restart my computer it boots up, but just shutting down or putting it in sleep mode and then trying to turn it on just goes to the same blank screen. The only way to turn it on is to boot to the blank screen, then hold the power button until all lights turn off, then turn it back on.

Do you see the Lenovo logo at power-on time? If so, it sounds like WINDOWS may be turning the display off.

Try pressing the F1 key and see what happens. This trigger may be Fn+F1, depending on how you have configured things.

If you can, try un-installing and re-installing the Hotkey Features Integration package (Version 9.0.0.10). See https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1wvu51w.exe.

Hello,

By any chance does your ThinkPad P50 have an Intel 600p or Pro 6000p series, or a Toshiba BG4, XG4 or XG5 series SSD in it?

According to this Microsoft knowledgebase article:

https://support.microsoft.com./en-us/help/4103721/windows-10-update-kb4103721

There are some incompatibilities between Windows 10 Version 1803 and those particular models of SSDs.

Hello,

I have not heard any reports of issues between Windows 10 Version 1803 and the Intel Pro 5400s, but just to verify, do you have a SSD from another manufacturer you can temporarily install and then do a clean install of Windows 10 to for testing purposes?
