Can I add Samsung 970 Evo Pro 500 GB (NVMe) on Lenovo Thinkpad P50

Hello

I have already tried yo add an Samsung 970 Evo (NVMe) but is failed with error 2104. When I talked with helpdesk on Lenovo they told me that wasn´t compatible. I wonder if the Samsung 970 Evo Pro. Or should I use a older model for example Samsung 960 Evo Pro.

I cannot respond directly to your situation but here's another data point:

My Samsung 970 Pro 1 TB drive installed and runs in my P70 (Win10, Xeon, ECC RAM) , with no issues whatsoever.  Do you have the correct tray for your P50 (I understand there are separate mounting kits with trays and connectors, for each of the NVME and SATA M.2 variants).

It seemed to be a problem with the ssd itself. I return it and bought another Samsung 970 Evo and it works. So now I will add another one in the other slot.

Re: Can I add Samsung 970 Evo Pro 500 GB (NVMe) on Lenovo Thinkpad P50

Just a quick note to others looking at this thread: I tried installing a ADATA SX8200 Pro (512GB) in my P50. Detects/tests fine in BIOS - but Win10 wont install (drive disappears when drive selection is refreshed!). The drive itself seems OK - at least I could install Windows on the drive when mounted in a desktop.

I was hoping to add a Intel 660p for bulk storage - but after the current experience this definitely seems a long-shot. :-O

Anyways, first things first (system drive). Guess I'll probably buy a Samsung 970 Evo Plus and hope the best based on the positive 970 Pro feedback here (thanks!)... I know it's not the same drives - but budget is not for the Pro (especially not after wasting money on the Adata-disk ;-)...

Re: Can I add Samsung 970 Evo Pro 500 GB (NVMe) on Lenovo Thinkpad P50

Excellent, thanks! I hope the 970 Evo Plus I've just ordered also works! ;-)
Btw. I found a Intel 660p in one of the substitutes lists (under Solid State Drives) here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/dk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-...
So those should work too (they are fast and fairly cheap if one can live with the awful write endurance!). I guess a very keen eye could find the 970 product numbers in the lists too (but I haven't been able to; did spot some Samsung 981'ers though)....
