Can I change my 4K display to 1080P on Thinkpad P50?

Hello,

I bought P50 last July with:

Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHz

NVIDIA Quadro M2000M

3840x2160 non-touch Display

When I was buying this laptop, I saw that a few people complaining the color of 1080P display was bad, therefore I chose the 4K display. But during this half year I found 4K hasn’t really had a compatible solution with all software, specially I have to use various types of apps. Then the 4K really becomes a burden to me since some apps looks very bad and I often have to switch resolutions for different apps.

I just want to know if it’s possible to change my display to 1080P. I don’t care about the color that much, but more the compatibility. I’m still in warranty and want to change display by Lenovo’s after-sales service. Has anyone had similar experience changing it? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I guess you have already tried to just change the resolution on your 4K to 1080p?

Yes but it looks vague, everything is blurred, which is not an acceptable solution for me..

I guess you also disabled scaling? That said, I had the same experience with the 4K on the P50 before returning it alltogheter when trying to run it in FHD.

Not using a monitor native resolution is generally not a good idea.

Since P50's are also offered with FHD Panel, I think the easiest would be to contact Lenovo and ask how much they woud charge for a panel swap.

Re: Can I change my 4K display to 1080P on Thinkpad P50?

Using 1080p resolution on 4K screen with 100% scaling doesn't make everything blurry.

Graphics renders perfectly fine, with precisely 4 physical pixels used to display one.

Rendering text is another story, because of ClearType. Must switch off ClearType completely, or play with its settings. It will not be as smooth as 1080p screen, but can be good enough to manage until all apps are upgraded.

Yes I disabled scaling but under FHD the text is still blurry.

Yes, and I also had to disable font smoothing, both in power settings and registry to get unfuzzy text.

Yes I would just ask Lenovo how much it costs. Should I go to a service point or find someone here from the forum?

Thanks for your answer.

One question, do running 1080P on 4K display and original 1080P display have same performance in terms of graphics consuming and rendering quality etc.? If they are the same then I would keep the 4K display and use your solution. But if 1080P on 4K still consumes more graphics power or provides worse rendering quality (I mean color, clearness etc.) then it doesn't make much sense to compromise.
