Clean Windows 7 Installation on W510

2010-06-24, 7:10 AM

Hi,

I wish to know, how can we make  a clean installation of windows 7 on my w510 from my Q drive/ recovery DVD's burned earlier. I don't want any crapware or thinkvantage tools, which I plan to install separately. How to find out the W7 DVD from the set of 4-5 recovery DVD's.

Can we install Windows 7 professional from any other W7 DVD and activate using the OEM Product ID ?

Thanks in advance...

Just to play devils advocate - if you currently have a Windows 7 installation, why not just uninstall all the stuff you don't want?  I actually found it very easy to remove all the 'crapware' and to remove the thinkvantage components I did not want - just by using the "uninstall a program" feature in the control panel.  Windows 7 is infinitely better about removing software and not leaving a lot of cruft around, so I found I was quite easily able to get to the minimalist install that was best for me.

You can use a standard Windows 7 DVD installation media to install Windows and use the product key on the sticker under the computer. The edition you install have to be the same as the product key of course. So if the product key is for Windows 7 Professional you have to install Windows 7 professional. When you try to activate over the internet the activation will fail and you will be given a phone number to call for your country. Call that number and do a automatic phone activation and it should work fine. I have done that several times without any problems.

I have no idea how to use the Q drive or recovery DVD's to do a clean install without the Lenovo software, but i don't think that's possible.

Thanks,

I think installation and activation using another CD looks like a viable option, it it works out.  Even if W7 may remove the traces of crapware, I have a feeling that it may still leave lot of things behind, and it will take considerable effort to find what's left.

On my w510 the winsxs folder in the windows directory is  above 20+GB,  and the same on my desktop where I made a clean installation with all the applications or more than what I have in the w510, cost just 6GB !!

Can we have some more expert opinions on this please..

Opinions about what? A clean install work fine using the product key that came with the computer. Using the pre-installed OS work fine as well. Some prefer a clean install while some prefer to use the pre-installed OS. There is no right or wrong in this case and all about opinions that might differ a lot.
