Crucial M4 msata 256 sloooow to boot windows.

After a year of installing apps my boot time was pretty bad - I generally went for a cup of tea while my W520 with fast WD 750GB 7200 RMP drive was booting.

So I purchased 2 SSD drives - the Crucial M4 256GB msata for windows, and the crucial M4 512GB for data.

I yanked out my old HD, and put in the two new ones.

I made the msata first in boot, and installed from the lenovo recovery DVDs.

This creates 3 partitions: "system_drv", Windows7_OS and Lenovo_Recovery.

Anyway, the boot time after installation and update to latest lenovo and MS everything, with no apps installed, is a feeble 67 seconds.  I think when I first got my lenovo, it was faster than this.  Half the time seems to be spent throwing up bios screens and stupid lenvo proection messages (goes to fast to read what its saying), it takes about 30s to get through those now.

So all in all a waste of time - I should have just stuck with the old mechanical HD and saved my self the time and money.  I could have installed windows on the faster m4 SSD, but this would meant i would have had to split my data (mostly photos) between the C and D drives - a pain.

Remove Rapid Boot from your configuration for sure. That was there from your HDD installation. I've never moved the OS and APPS from the the HDD to any SSD in the using the recovery DVDs. I've either cloned the mSata drive from the original HDD partitions or restored an image that had been the last runtime. Either Acronis THM or Ghost 15 will do the job without much fuss. My boot times on my second W520 (which has less installed applications is around 37 seconds. My other system which is more heavily loaded takes 46 seconds. The original HDD installations took about 2 1/2 minutes to a usable desktop and web browser.

Thanks for the feedback.

What is rapidboot, and how does one get rid of it?

Is it something in the bois only, or does something need to be changed in the OS/Drivers also?

My second big mistake was not purchasing windows 7 and installing without the Lenovo bloatware, not a single piece of which I want.

Found something called rapid boot shield in the add remove programs. Not sure if this is all I need to do, but have uninstalled that. Now to see if its any quicker...

@eos - Regarding your comment on buying Windows 7 - you can download a Windows 7 ISO and install Windows 7 from scratch using your existing activation code. There is no need to buy whaqt you already own.

If this is true, then I will doubly regret installing the lenovo bloatware. Where does one find the activation code? Does microsoft let you download windows 7 iso without purchasing it first?  Its too late for me now, as I just spent 2 days reinstalling and reconfiguring all my apps, but for anyone else doing the same thing.

Re: Crucial M4 msata 256 sloooow to boot windows.

RapidBoot helps on platter drives, and in theory, should not affect SSD systems negatively (but it does).

I think you're on some sort of diagnostic boot rather than quick boot. Check in the BIOS.

Re: Crucial M4 msata 256 sloooow to boot windows.

I uinstalled rapid boot shield from the "add remove programs", and switched off diagnostic boot from bios.

The result: time to boot to being able to load a page in FF = 67s.

Slower than the mechanical drive when I had no SW installed.
