I have been unable to get any sound to my TV through the DisplayPort using the Accell Displayport to HDMI-A adapter. After hooking up the adapter I got a message box saying --- An HDMI to DVI connection has been detected. In order to hear audio on your HDMI based TV or display, you will need to have a separate audio connection from your computer sound outputs to your TV or audio equipment. For more information, click the help button.---
Here is the message I got after clicking the help button.
HDMI™ Connectivity
If your DTV is equipped with HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and your ATI Radeon™ graphics card has a DVI connection, you can connect the DTV to your computer.
The types of connections and functions of your video card vary by model. Please see the User’s Guide on the installation CD for information specific to your card.
On pre-ATI Radeon 2000 series graphics cards, the DVI output of the graphics card supplies video only. To connect this type of graphics card to an HDMI-compatible DTV, you need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable to supply video to your DTV. You must also make a separate connection from the audio output of your computer to the audio input of your HDMI-compatible DTV.
The DVI output of some more recent ATI Radeon graphics cards, such as the ATI Radeon X2000 series that has audio processing capabilities, is comprised of both video and audio signals. If you have an ATI Radeon X2000 series graphics card, you only need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable to connect to an HDMI-compatible DTV.

I think now is a good time to call Lenovo support.. it sounds like the graphic card needs a adapter of some kind which might not be on the 5700.
To bad this can't be software emulated some how.

I will be calling Lenovo support...On the ATI website there is a article on the lack of audio output through the HDMI connection, for the FirePro V5700. It says they are working on the problem and will post any solution.
On a side note: The picture being displayed on my tv through the DisplayPort connection is beautiful, razor sharp.

The answer to this question is no, it will not.
You will find, I am pretty sure, that our answer is consistent with other PC vendors in the industry currently shipping DisplayPort. It has nothing to do with some conspiracy to implement copy protection but more to do with the how the Intel chipset handles audio and video in this generation (Montevina). In the next generation, Calpella timeframe, DisplayPort implementations should (emphasize, should since we're a long way from shipping Calpella notebooks and they're still under development) output DisplayPort audio and video together.
I realize that I blogged about DP and touted its advantages a few months ago. I still believe in it, but I am finding it disppointing how slowly it is coming to market and how slowly features of the specification are being turned "on." For a fast-paced, high tech industry, the PC industry can move pretty slowly sometimes.

I am the one the originally started this post. Thank you for the answer, but I am very dissapointed. I was hoping that, with a software upgrade, we could get this working. Is there any way for my W500, with software, or hardware upgrade, to sound through the display port?
You know, when a customers see an option, they expect that option to work. If you buy a car with a CD player, I you expect the CD player to work as designed. I don't care how GM, or whaterer car company, is wiring the radio, and how their next model will have this working. If it does not function according to spec, then don't include it, or make sure that customers are aware that there are features that don't work.
I do a lot of traveling, and I wanted my notebook to hookup to an HD TV, and play blueray disks. Or go to my fried's house, who does not have a blue ray player, and watch a movie there. Sure, I can connect speakers to the headphone jack, or, whatever. I know there are other options. I can purchase a portalbe blueray player. Or, I could have purchased an HP notebook, which not only comes with HDMI, but with external SATA.
Sorry to vent, but I am very dissapoined.

So, does this mean that the W500 will NEVER be able to output audio through the DisplayPort?

Displayport seams like what USB was in version 1.0.. does great things but will do even better things down the road. I didn't buy the Lenovo for a Home Theater system but it's nice to know I can find a good adapter for HDMI video. It would be a BIG plus to have digital output but isn't why I purchased the Lenovo. Don't give up hope, You can find Notebook cards that can do surround sound. It sounds like it would be worth the purchase in your situation.

There still seems to be confusion. Let me be very clear. Based on every engineer I've talked to, there will be no way whatsoever to make your current systems with DisplayPort also output audio. This is a hardware issue not unique to Lenovo. It is the current state of the industry. You'll find this same issue on current Dell, HP, whatever with DisplayPorts.
Future versions of our systems WILL have audio + video output capability. It is in plan, but since we cannot comment on specifics of unannounced products, I cannot say when or which systems will have this capability.

I vote mkohut's post be labeled as the solution to this thread. It is CLEAR and to the point.
It would be nice to list some of the Digital sound options available to all notebooks also such as the USB adapters, pccards and docking ports.
