Does the W520 mSATA slot Support Hardware Encrypted Drives (FDE Drives)?

2018-03-08, 6:48 AM

I have aa mSATA SSD which supports hardware 256 Bit AES FDE (Built in Hardware Encryption). I wanted to know if the W520 BIOS or UEFI permits the use if it's hardware encryption. And if so, how to enable it.

If it is hardware encryption in the drive, there is nothing special for the laptop to do. You need to set an ATA password or someone could simply move the SSD to another computer

Re: Does the W520 mSATA slot Support Hardware Encrypted Drives (FDE Drives)?

The source of the confusion is the BIOS does not allow me to set a HDD password for one of my mSATA drives. I confirmed the motherboard/BIOS is working normally otherwise by putting in an a Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB mSATA drive, the password option appears in the BIOS just fine.

The mSATA drive it does not allow this for is a 2TB Samsung drive I pulled out of a Samsung T5 portable drive. Very odd as during the POST process, the BIOS, and RAID utilities all recognize the drive just fine. As does Windows. Just can't set a password in the BIOS under the SECURITY tab.

I'm assuming the BIOS only shows the password option for drives that feature hardware encryption?

Any ideas to remedy this?

Hopefully it's not a firmware issue with the 2TB mSATA drive. Though it does support hardwre encryption, I hope it's not only when used in the provided enclosure.

Hello,

Do you know if the 256-bit AES FDE for the 2TB Samsung T5 external USB SSD is a part of the mSATA SSD's circuit board itself and not the bridge board in the enclosure?

I'm quite positive the encryption hardware is not built into the PCB of the housing, however it seems the mSATA drives in these housings may have a custom firmware that facilitates the encryption with the OS via the USB adapter housing.

I was considering flashing the firmware but there is no new firmware released yet for the equivelant line of mSATA drives (860 EVO), and even when an update does get released, not sure if it will be applicable as they do not make a 2TB mSATA drive (1TB is largest), if each firmware is drive size specific. Even then, flashing the drive may not be that simple depending on how the Samsung software functions.

something doesn't make sense.  You talk about a housing and USB.  The mSATA slot isn't USB and there is no housing.  The drive goes into the WWAN slot.  The laptop does nothing extra for the encryption.  It is handled in the card.  Since it is hardware encryption, you set a HD password for protection.  Otherwise the mSATA card could be moved to another computer and read.

Hello,

The Samsung T5 is portable SSD drive that connects via USB to the host computer.  Internally, it's a mSATA SSD with an mSATA to USB adapter inside an enclosure.  Unfortunately, taking it apart to get at the mSATA SSD is probably one of those things which violates the warranty.

richk, see post #3.

The warranty on my drive isn't relevant to my issue.

Another possible reason I suspect is the drive has eDrive activated from factory. Problem is though I see no PSID anywhere on the mSATA drive or the enclosure to deactivate it. Just the serial number, model number, and another 10 digit number.

Is it possible for the PSID to have a 10 digit length?

Hello,

As far as I know, the PSID is always 32 characters long.
