Extreme throttling with P1 Gen 2 and USB-C Doc Gen2 behaviour

2019-09-21, 14:47 PM

So I noticed that when I use this setup where the only thing plugged into the laptop is the USB-C cable, it can charge the laptop's battery albeit slowly which is expected due to the limited power it can deliver.

When I run Cinebench along with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (CPU voltage adjusted -0.140):

  • when I only use the USB-C dock, XTU shows thermal throttling immediately, CPU temp is around 57-60C (Cinebench test results, ~800 pts)

  • if I plug in the supplied 130W that came with the laptop directly to the laptop along with the USB-C dock, test runs as good as it gets (barring any throttling due to temperature of course) (~2100-2200 pts)

  • if I plug in the supplied 130W before starting the test then remove it, leaving just the USB-C dock plugged in, the results as just as good as (~2100-2200 pts), sometimes running the test again, the results are good

Has anybody seen this before? I set the cooling to active for both battery and plugged in and set the performance to max in the BIOS, but aside from that, I don't know what else can be done and suspect that this might be a BIOS thing overriding things still.

The behaviour is inconsistent, sometimes I can run the Cinebench test a couple of times with just the USB-C cable attached to the laptop from the dock, and performance is great, which was the case last night.  This morning however, I noticed it was back to throttling again even when browsing the web (max core frequency as low as 0.88GHz).

Hi Tanner2! Welcome to our forums community. The USB-C Dock Gen2 is not compatible with the Thinkpad P1 Mobile Workstation. You can check it from this link: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/acc500106. The compatible docking station for your laptop can be found here: https://accessorysmartfind.lenovo.com/#/search?categoryL1Name=Docking&categoryL2Names&keyword=&pageIndex=1&pageSize=40&query=20MD%20MT%2820MD%29&queryIsMT=1&subSeriesList=22WS2WPP101&systemId=. Click on the Category then click on Docking. You may also refer to the photo below.

Been getting a lot of issues with the USB-C dock this morning, system event log shows this:

The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

Have to unplug and plug back in the dock to get things working again like the network....keyboard plugged into the dock still works.

@Jwes_Lenovo: tanner2's post, where he provided a link proving that this dock is supposed to be compatible is correct. I checked that link, since I got exactly the same Hardware (P1 Gen2 + 40AS00090EU, the EU instead US should only matter the documentation).

Obviously Lenovo provides different informations at different places.

In addition, neiter spec seems to be correct. The specs says clearly, it can run at most one Monitor with 4K@60Hz, but with 2 Monitors with 4K, it will go down to only 30Hz. In contrast to this, I do operate it in the configuration as written above with 3 Monitors, which provide at the same time:

  • Monitor1 : 4K @ 60Hz by DP
  • Monitor2 : 4K @ 60Hz by DP
  • Monitor3 : 1920x1200 @ 60Hz by HDMI

According to the spec, this is impossible. While that is of course a nice surprise to me, since it is better then specified, it raises the question whether the information on your web-site is up to date. It would be great if you could give some insight in this, since we are planing to buy a few more P1 Laptops , but not bevore it is clear what docking station to order.
