GPU Problem: ThinkPad P73 with Quadro RTX 5000, 6c Xeon, 32GB ECC

Hello All,

I am having an issue with the P73 I've just received

I opted for a prebuilt option configured as follows:

6 core Xeon CPU

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000

32GB Stock ECC mem (another 32GB is on its way)

Stock Win 10 Pro

There is a problem with GPU however

Five - six minutes after the boot, clock drops to 300mhz core /100 memory and stays there;

Needles to say, performance tanks, lag fest begins; The only way to get out of this state is the reboot;

GPU-Z list perf cap reasons as: power, therma;

Temps are ok though: 65degree on IDLE (with intel built in chip off), up to 86 under load (before it drops frequencies, once ti does never breaks 65d);

This happens with or without load: if I start Heaven Benchmark as soon as possible, system is able to complete test before throttling begins with decent scores;

Everything is up to date; Latest NVIDIA drivers; BIOS and stuff; Everything is switched to performance everywhere as far as I can tell;

I understand this is a new system, but hoping someone else may have had this ...

Thanks!

I don't have one like that to test, but I want to confirm you have the latest BIOS/UEFI (1.10).  Sometimes they are available for download before they are automatically selected by System Update

I have no other ideas.  Maybe someone else can help here

Re: GPU Problem: ThinkPad P73 with Quadro RTX 5000, 6c Xeon, 32GB ECC

So it appears to be related to power or thermals

Could be a defective part (not nesesarily GPU as this affects CPU as well it seems) or misconfiguration, something similar to Apple's Mac Book Pro misconfig

I was able to temporarily resolve this by uninstalling (and killing auto installs) of

Lenovo Thermal Management Driver

Lenovo Power Management Driver

Lenovo PM driver

Lenovo APS

and I think another power related Lenovo piece, I don't remember its name

I also replaced driver with RTX 2080 one (installed just fine, shows up as quadro still) but I don't think this is related, tried it before)

Now I am able to run whatever for as long as I want without limp

Still I requested return / exchange as I can't be sure if this is hardware or software issue

Thanks!

I can also hear fans kicking in almost immideately under the load (as opposed to no fans at all till like 85C on GPU and 90 on A

Re: GPU Problem: ThinkPad P73 with Quadro RTX 5000, 6c Xeon, 32GB ECC

depends on your defenition of normal

I am getting 6399 in Heaven at basic (4867 on my Razer Blade Pro with 1080)

and 3200 in Heaven at Extreme (3049 on Blade)

Had no chance to do superposition

Under constant load, clocks appear to flunctuate in 1500-1600 ballpark

6000 mhz for memory

This should be a separate topic though
