Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

[ Edited ]

I would run chkdsk utility but this seems rather as a disk/bus controller error. Lenovo is known to use proprietary firmware in SSDs and there were various issues related to drive power management in the past.

As for BitLocker make sure you have good backup of recovery keys.

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

Thanks.  For ref, just run chkdsk and it reports no issues.

As long as there are either no errors/warnings in Event Log nor reported by Lenovo Solution Center the issue definitely needs Lenovo attention given the P70 price tag because it is already reported by two customers. I have notified forum moderator about that.

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

For anyone having this problem, I have 2 questions:

  1. Can you please tell me the model info of the SSD(s) that is installed in the system?  You can get this information from Device Manager -> Disk Drives.  I'm looking for the model such as "Samsung MZ7TE256xxxx"
  2. Can you be more specific about the failure in Lenovo Solution Center?  There are actually 2 different PCIe-related tests.  One is "PCI/PCI-e Test" in the "Motherboard" category.  The other is "PCI express status test" in the "PCI Express" category.  Can you please clarify which one(s) is failing?  Screenshot would be great.

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

Sounds like an early version BIOS problem, yes?

This definitely needs to be reported to Lenovo support obviously.

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

Thanks. Model: NVMe SAMSUNG MZVPV256

Lenovo Solution Center v3.2.002: The issue I see is under Motherboard PCI/PCI-e Test. Result states "Invalid", but the Motherboard has a tick against it - result code WMB008000-UL7VJG. Overall, the test says it passes.  PCI Express has one entry for "PCI express status test" which has Passed.  I don't appear to be able to attach files to this post, otherwise I would have attached the report.

I've contacted Tech Support and have a call reference number. I was asked to restart, press F10 and run a full storage test and send the result log. The result of that test was a full pass. The only one that wasn't a PASSED was Storage Read Test which reported NOT APPLICABLE. The result code was UHD01V000-UL7VJG.

Can still boot into windows and haven't noticed any negative side-effects aside from the error on boot. Note: the error doesn't appear when I restart - only booting from cold.

Not sure where to go from here.

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

The BIOS was mentioned in a previous post so here is some version information I've just written down if it's of any use.

UEFI BIOS Version N1DET37W (1.11)

UEFI BIOS Date 2015-12-10

Embedded Controller Version N1DHT29W (1.09)

ME Firmware Version 11.0.0.1191

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

The issue with the motherboard PCI/PCI-e test is a bug in LSC.  The next version of LSC will fix this issue.  It is not a hardware problem.  Please ignore it.  Sorry for this trouble.

For the error on boot, would you be willing to try a new BIOS version?  This is version 1.14 for ThinkPad P70:

You have the new PCIe/NVMe SSD, and just being honest with you, some bugs are still being worked out between the SSD/firmware/BIOS.

I don't know how SSD is connected to the systemboard in this laptop (directly or via additional cable), what if that cable or connectors cause issue? There are enough cases in the forum and internet that confirm this cause, other laptops related, of course.

x220 • Gobi 2000 3g  |  x220 • hdd, msata ssd, 3g, wifi, gps -- unique hand-made config
x1c Gen3 (2015) • WQHD MT IPS, PCIe ssd
Miix 2 10"  |  Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android 5.0), BKC800 BT Keyboard, FolioCase
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 wireless router, hdd 1 TB, BT speaker, power bank

Do it well, worse becomes itself

Re: Heads up on ThinkPad P70

Thanks for your help.  The laptop is "working/functional" at the moment and, as I need it for work, I'm hesitant to be experimental with the BIOS in case things get worse especially if things are still fluid with the SSD/firmware/BIOS.  I see that the latest "released" version of the BIOS is still 1.10 - if an update is officially released I may be more tempted.  Or if the official warranty support tell me to do it.
