Question

I have a ThinkPad W510 and I installed a SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III. I inserted the installation disk  and installed the device, but the computer seems unable to detect the second hard drive on My Computer.

When I go to Device Manager, however, I see two hard drives.

How do I format the second hard drive?

Answer

Your new second hard drive (sitting in the UltraBay HDD caddy adapter) is not yet "initialized."

That's why Explorer does not "see" it.

To initialize a brand-new hard drive:

1. Click Windows orb. Type "Disk Management" (without quotes) in the search box. Select the option "Create and format hard disk partitions" to open the program.

2. You should see a pop-up window similar to this:

3. Follow the steps to create a new simple volume (partition) and assign a drive letter and format the partition.
