Installing a GOBI 2000 (post-sale upgrade) - Mini PCI express card

2010-05-11, 8:09 AM

Hello there,

I recently purchased a Lenovo w510 without a integrated broadband modem. (Gobi 2000 - Mini PCI express card)

I notice that the slot for a simcard is present in the laptop, and am now wondering what it would take for me to install this product myself.

Has anyone had any experience/success with this?

The product description is here:

http://www.qualcomm.com/common/documents/analyst/Gobi_2000_ProductSheet.pdf

So it's a Mini PCI express that we're dealing with.

The basic installation method is here:

http://pc-level.com/2009/02/installing-wireless-card-on-laptop/

(also I've just noticed that the procedure is well documented in the user manual):

//start menu/help and support/lenovo access help/replacing devices

But I'm wondering if anyone else has made this upgrade post-sale and had success/challenges.

Thanks,

SBK

I think you can, provided that you obtain a Gobi 2000 card with Lenovo FRU. A generic Gobi 2000 card or a Gobi 2000 card from another vendor will not work in your W510 without BIOS modding.

Thanks Hazart,

That helped..

I've looked into this and for people who are wondering, the FRU number is 78Y1399.

It can be purchased from the Lenovo store here. (It's currently selling for $219 - a bit pricey compared to the $137AU if it had been included in original customisation build).

Anyway, I'll have a think about the priority of this expense and if I go ahead I'll advise on results/issues etc.
