On my P50, when I check for updates with Lenovo Companion, it always tries to install Intel Management Engine 11.0 Firmware, and it downloads, says it failed when the little black command prompt opens, reboots, and then the update history said it was installed, yet Intel Management Engine 11.0 Firmware keeps popping up as an update.
What is this update supposed to do? Why is it failing? Everything else on this computer is up to date.

Have you tried downloading the update directly from the page:
Name: Intel Management Engine 11.0 Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 7 (64-bit) - ThinkPad P50, P70
and installing it manually? Sometimes that works when an automated install does not, or gives you a more detailed error message.

It's a "lights-out" style remote management tool for use in the enterprise.

I've tried every way suggested to get IME 11.0 firmware to update. After download, the install brings up a black dialog box and there is a line in red, but it disappears in a nanano second so I am unable to read it. After the PC reboots, it says it has istalled, but it hasen't. How imprtant is this FW update? Can I just ignore it?

It is a security update, and those are important to install. I would suggest calling Lenovo Customer Service at +1 (855) 253-6686 if you are in the United States and opening a ticket with technical support in order to troubleshoot why the update is failing.

I do not know what Lenovo's support policy is for this particular update, but I would still suggest contacing them.
