Keys give wrong character.

2015-01-25, 6:54 AM

I have been having this intermittent problem with my W530. When I press a key I get the wrong character for example pressing the number one key will give an A. When this happens I have to restart the machine to get it to work properly again. If this has happened to anyone else or if anyone has any ideas as to what the problem could be please let me know

Are your keyboard region settings configured properly? Should be under "Text Services and Input Languages".

Thank you for your reply. I checked those settings and they are set for , English, United States, but even if they were somehow changed that does not explaine the intermittent nature of the problem

Last time I had this happen on my W520, it was the keyboard itself failing.

Try a bootable Linux environment just to rule out everything software.

I run Unbuntu through VirtualBox would that work?

If it is the keyboard I will be very disappointed in the quality of the newer thinkpads. My T60p has only had one minor issue in the 7/8 years that I have owned it.

Ideally, no. The point is to bypass as much of the existing system as possible to rule it out.

Sometimes defects happen; keyboards are fortunately relatively cheap and easy to replace.
