Lenovo P50 lost Windows product key from BIOS?

2019-10-17, 6:56 AM

Hi,

when I received my P50, I have started it, updated all available firmware, and then removed windows completely and installed Fedora.

During this period I occasionally updated my BIOS or other firmware using LVFS project. I also played with BIOS settings to try my fingerprint to work, so I tried many things in BIOS settings.

Now. Yesterday I have downloaded fresh Windows 10 image, as I have bought additional hard drive, and installed it. To my surprise, Windows did not detect my product key from firmware/bios.

On one of the posts in internet I have read, that my product key can be read from Linux in this path: /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM but it doesn't exist in my system (Fedora 30). I have also tried different tools on Windows, to retrieve my product key, but no success.

So I think, I may accidentally remove my product key from firmware/bios when played with different options.

And my question is, what now? Is there any way, I can get my product key from Lenovo based on my serial number? Or you know other tool or technique that I can use?

And no, I have not used recovery windows image from Lenovo as I don't want all bloatware or other unneeded software on my Windows. But if this is solution, I can give it a try. Let me know.

ahh... and my warranty still is current.

I was in the exact same situation as you. I contacted Lenovo support and after insisting I reinstall via the DDRS tool they asked me to run some commands and send the screenshots to them. They then said they would send me the licence key at 5 days. Unfortunately I was too busy to respond and my request closed before I could respond. The second request I put in I supplied all the previous information but this time was told to contact another team. At this point I got fed up and forked out for another licence myself.

Hi!

The MSDM is stored in firmware, and enabled by DMI strings. It should still be there unless you changed DMI strings.

I once had a motherboard replaced on a IdeaCentre 300S and the tech forgot to reactivate the licence. I had to use the firmware flash utility to set back the right DMI strings.

However, I wonder what DMI strings you have right now. In my machine, it looks like this:

Motherboard Version	SDK0J40697 WIN

I have reviewed all ACPI or DMI strings and couldn't find it from Linux. Could you tell how exactly should I find it?

In Windows, you could use HWiNFO or Aida64.

Aida64 also shows ACPI tables, where you should see SLIC and/or MSDM keys.

Just boot into the BIOS.  The 4th line from the bottom says Preinstalled OS license

In the end I have created service request. Someone contacted me and requested for the photo of this BIOS page and also to try to run this command on Windows, to get product key (which did not work for me, as response is empty):

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

They decided to replace motherboard. So I am waiting.
