I have an lenovo p50 thinkpad thats roughly one and a half year old.
Since last week it won't charge while the thinkpad is turned on, but will charge while its turned off.
I have tried a different charger from a roommate who has the same notebook but even that won't work.
It's as if the thinkpad won't detect the charger.
I have tried turning off airplane mode since i have seen that that could be an issue, but it still won't charge.

what is the wattage of the charger?

I asked about the charger because with a smaller (90-watt) charger, it will only charge while off. It sounds like the circuitry (motherboard) is not correctly recognizing the charger capacity. It checks resistance from control pin to ground. Do you still have warranty remaining?

Have you got Lenovo Vantage installed ? If not install that and open Hardware Settings >> Power >> .
This should show you how the system is seeing your charger .. it should be 170 watts (scroll down).
Scrolling down further you can see another setting called Battery Threshold .
I have mine set to 75% start charging when below and 85% stop charging at. Switch ON Custom Battery Charge Threshold setting switch above.
See if that sorts out your issue.

I have tried the battery treshold thing which did not seem to work either.
It just doesn't detect the charger.
I was hoping it was just some minor issue but as you said, it seems to be a circuit malfunction.
I'll have to send it to the service center then.

I had exactly the same problem. I have a Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows 10 Dual Boot and my Thinkpad P52 would only charge when the lid was closed - independent of the operating system in use.
Many thanks to mutty for the advice to check out Lenovo Vintage. At first it did not display my power supply, but when I turned off the Airplane Power Setting it started work. It also charges now when using Ubuntu 16.04 and the Laptop is turned on.
This issue is really crazy^^
