Lenovo P52 won't boot after BIOS update

2020-02-11, 22:30 PM

I updated my BIOS using Lenovo support site. When the laptop rebooted I see the Lenovo screen and then a message at the bottom of the screen that says Preparing Automatic Repair. It then goes into a Choose an option screen with options like Continue, Use a device, Troubleshoot, Use another operating system.

I played around with the BIOS settings to restore them to default, but still won't boot properly.

Did the BIOS restore complete normally? Can you get to a boot menu? What does it show?

The changes to the BIOS had no effect. It still goes into the same Windows recovery mode screen. I gave up last night and tried reinstalling windows. I was able to boot from a USB and start the install of windows, but the first time the install process tried to reboot I got the same issue.

Make sure secure boot (on security tab) is turned off and that CSM is turned on (startup tab).  If you have UEFI only and a legacy disk, it can look like what you describe.

Re: Lenovo P52 won't boot after BIOS update

I had to enable secure boot to reinstall windows. My copany uses a custom install image that requires secure boot to be turned on. Once I did that you can't select Legacy or CSM mode.

I guess the question I have is "How can I reinstall the BIOS without a working version of Windows?"

All the steps I have found on the Lenovo site and elsewhere assume you have a working Windows to perform the install.

Is there no way to reinstall the BIOS from a USB?

The BIOS download page for you machine offers two ways to update without a running windows: a bootable CD in an external USB drive, or via a bootable flash drive.  Either one requires another machine on which to create the media.

The CD image and readme are on the download page.  The flash drive approach is a little harder to find.  It isn't always in the readme.

Thanks very much! This fixed the issue. After installing the latest BIOS I was able to reinstall Windows.

It would be really great if the USB method was shown on the main page of the BIOS downloads.
