Lenovo W510 Memory Upgrade

2017-02-02, 16:29 PM

I want to upgrade the memory on my Lenovo W510. It currently has 8 GB total and I want to get it up to 16GB. Currently there is 4GB inside under the keyboard. I only found one slot there even though its supposed to have 2 there. The other 4GB is on the underside of the unit. You can see from the photo that the 4GB is installed on the left side. The right side is also supposed to house a memory card but there doesn't exist a holder for the memory card on that side. So basically I have two slots that are usable. Can I just switch the 4GB card with 8GB cards to get to my 16 GB?

Welcome to the forum!

Could you let us know the MTM of your  W510? It's a 7 digit code that can be found at the bottom of the notebook in a black & white sticker. Please do not post your S/N.

Regards

Hello and welcome,

I can't answer the max RAM question, but FWIW the dual-core W510 models only have 2 usable RAM slots.

The dual-core PSREF spec says 8GB max but that may have been the max available from Lenovo at the time.  Hopefully someone with experience will join the conversation.

Are you sure about that? I found out further that since mine is dual processor the capacity is 8GB while the quad processor models have the 16GB capacity. Confusing.

That was written before there were 8GB memory chips.  2X8GB is fine.  Quad core machines with 4 slots can use 4X8GB=32GB

I will try purchasing two 8GB memory chips, switch them out with the 4GB's and let you know how it works out.

2 X 8GB did not work. I'm assuming then that the capacity for this unit is 2 X 4GB.
