Welcome to the forum!

I was of the opinon your W510 will only support 1st generation Intel Core i7 models. Meaning you could upgrade to one of these CPU's:

  • Intel Core i7-820QM, 1,73 GHz bis 3,06 GHz, 8MB
  • Intel Core i7-920XM, 2,0 GHz bis 3,2 GHz, 8MB

Is the processor in the laptop actually upgradeable? I had no idea.

Yes, W510 has a socketed CPU so it's upgradable.

Yes, correct it is upgradable. I just was not aware that I could not upgrade it to a 4th generation processor.

Has anyone tried upgrading to a G2 socket processor other than the first generation with a W-510?

Is this marked a solution because you have tried it or because you have an opinion?

This generation ThinkPad supports only 1st generation Core-i CPU's (source: Click me)

I never consciously tried a Sandy Bridge CPU since it's not supported. If I recall correctly I checked few forums in the past and nobody managed to do it (I think few tried and while the CPU may fit on the socket the laptop just won't start).

Those are engineering specs .... does not mean other G2 processors won't work as they are same socket same wattage.
