Lenovo W541 Optical Drive SATA port speed

Hi,

I got W541 with DVD-RW but i am not gonna use it, at all. Want to add extra hard drive into caddy insted of optical drive.

Called Lenovo but they couldn't answer me what is the SATA port version in Optical Drive connector.

Anyone here able to confirm? If is SATA 3.0 then will go for SSD (512GB-1000GB) drive in caddy, if slower then thinking about regular HDD (1-2TB).

Thanks for help in advance

Re: Lenovo W541 Optical Drive SATA port speed

It is hard to know for certain (as I don't have a W541) but I do not believe SATA-II controllers have been used by OEMs on motherboards for a number of years.  The spec was officially ratified and released in 2009.

The W541 is a fairly recent model; it should have a SATA-III chipset on motherboard, whether or not the optical drive is rated for that spec.  Any caddy you might purchase is likely to support that speed; on-board connectors basically pass-through signals from drive to interface.

Re: Lenovo W541 Optical Drive SATA port speed

Hi Practical,

Thanks, you just made me pretty sure it will be Sata III. Just ordered "Newmodeus HDD / SSD Caddy Adapter for Lenovo W540, W541, T540, T440p" from Amazon and got spare Crucial 240GB SSD at home so will test it and use it for a bit.

Lenovo caddy (04X1602) is way to expensive in UK, about £80-£90, Newmodeus has good reviews and cost £18.
