Linux distro for W520-w530-w540 running W7/10 for linux beginner

2019-10-14, 8:58 AM

I am experienced Windows user, but I don't like W10 spying on me and I want to start learning and slowly transition to linux distro with a reliable option to run windows programs I am familiar with in secure controlled environment. Memory, storage space and processing power is not a problem. Thank you for any recommendations

I had the same worries you have and same experience. Decided on moving to Linux for good. I use Ubuntu because on and older Netbook I had Lubuntu and it worked fine. My recommendation is: keep a windows pc around just in case and install a Linux distro of choice. You will be solving issues, and learning, as you go.

Thank you. I have Ubuntu 18.04 on separate disk, but I can't say I am enjoying the learning curve.

In order for me to really drop W7/10 I would have to run really good W7/10 emulator, which will allow me tu run everything I need and this is stil;l beyond my very limited Linux abilities.

Hello, I use an Ideapad 330 and have been running Fedora WORKSTATION distribution on it for quite some time.  (Started with Fedora version 25, now it is up to version 32.)  LENOVO is starting to support and actually ship new computers with Fedora installed from the factory, so the number of users with knowledge of LENOVO specific issues will expand greatly soon.

Installing Fedora 32 from the downloaded bootable USB should work well.  Fedora also provides combinations of application programs for various usage scenarios called "spins."  Find it on website getFedora.org.

The ONLY software application I have not been able to find a pleasurable LINUX version to use is the Lenovo VANTAGE automatic system hardware probing and testing suite.  About each 14 months or so I boot into Windows and run those scans to hopefully find a hardware fault before it completely stops the system.  My system is dual boot, however with infrequent use, if I run out of hard drive space, I'll remove Windows and use a bootable USB to run the VANTAGE system each 18 months or so....

It is very common for cross platform compilation purposes to set up a "Virtual Machine" on a computer using Operating System "A" that simulates using Operating System "B."   A large number of applications are available under linux, WINE has been available for a long time, others have Virtual Box, or Virtual machine within the titles.  Pick one someone you know has been using, and install it.

Sincerely,

Usetoberich
