Linux firmware upgrade problems p51s (Ubuntu 18.04 BIOS 1.38)

2019-04-26, 13:42 PM

I am trying to upgrade my current BIOS (1.21) on my p51s running ubuntu 18.04.2.  to the current 1.38  (n1vet48w.cab).  When I follow the instructions in the readme here https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1vet48w.txt  of using

fwupdmgr install n1vet48w.cab

I get "No supported devices found"

or if I try

fwupdate -l

from insided the extraced cab file, it returns noting.

What am I missing?  How do I upgrade the firmware on my laptop?

You can optionally download the iso from https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t570/downloads/ds120369 copy it to a usb drive and boot from it to upgrade the bios

I have tried to download this ISO image and create a bootable USB from it, but the image fails to open in "Startup Disk Creator" app in ubuntu.  It's as if the ISO is bad.  What do I do next?

I also tried downloading and using the iso from a previous firmware version and it fails too.  Further I tried this on a mac, and that failed to create a bootable disk too.

I don't know how you can make a bootable USB stick by just dropping the ISO file on the usb stick.  I have tried on a windows machine I borrowed and that and it just copies the iso file itself onto the stick.  I also tried downloading Rufus tool for creating bootable USBs, and when I try and open the .iso file using that tool it says that the file format is unknown.

I've never had any luck making a bootable flash drive with the Lenovo ISO either, although I've seen some discussion that it's possible using geteltorito.

One other angle you  could try since you have access to Windows is to use the included tool for building a bootable flash drive.  I took a quick peek at the exe and it looks like it's still incuded.  Don't know if it would work any better than what you've tried...

Update ThinkPad BIOS with bootable flash drive

The other way I just verified works is using windows 10 right click on the iso file and do and extract files.  From the extract dialog select the empty usb key device or inut the path and then seelct ok.  The files from the iso will be palced on the key.  Since this is an UEFI bootable image it should now be bootable on the machine that needs upgraded.

I am trying to get bios 1.22 for my T580, running Linux Mint 19.2

Thanks for the workaround with the ISO.  I will try it.

But why do the uefi/bios update instructions on the Lenovo site fail to work.  Please update them!  I have followed the instructions scrupulously, trying both fwupdmgr and fwupdate, and neither worked at all.  The error messages were the same as Zippy314's.

Best,

DW

The "download the ISO" route didn't work for me either.  I created the bootable USB, but when I came to boot (uefi), the usb was initially read, but thereafter nothing happened.

This is pretty poor show, Lenovo.
