M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

Hello everyone!

I own a Lenovo work station laptop,model number W540 BGCt01ww docked with a 2.5 inch 256gb ssd (that is the Samsung mz7te256hmhp-000L7).

I wish to enhance this computer's writing/reading speed and expand its capacity a bit by installing an M.2 SSD ,I've read some good reviews on the samsung Pro 950 M.2 SSD -link-> http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/memory-storage/ssd/950-pro/MZ-V5P512BW

Is my lenovo W540 compatible with the M.2 ssd ? Is it hard to install it by myself?

Does it worth the investment of buying a bigger M.2 SSD(512 vs 256) as a partition for windows?

Thank you all for your support here in the forums,I use them quite often and i really my Lenovo!

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

Storage device
• 2.5-inch form factor, 7-mm or 9.5-mm height hard disk drive
• 2.5-inch form factor, 7-mm height solid-state drive
• M.2 solid-state drive for caching only (on some models)

as the bottom one says only for caching which means it will make the current one faster and you will not gain any space from it, then you have to find out if your model supports it

info from http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/user_guides/t540p_w540_ug_en.pdf

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

You can use an M2 SSD in the WWAN slot as an additional drive on that model, but not the samsung 950.  You need one that is a SATA type, not PCIe and has a 2242 form factor.  The selection is more limited.  The biggest example I know is a Transcend ts512gmts400.  Obviously, you cannot put one in the WWAN slot if there is a WWAN card there already.

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

I have W540 20BG-001 US S/N ******** with empty M.2 slot (only wifi card is installed) and I would like to instal M2 SSD. I understand that it can be only the short M.2 card, but the Transcend ts512gmts400 SSDs I googled up shows that they have two notches at the bottom and the W540 has only one notch in my W540 and some info shows that the M.2 SSD should be only 2230 form.

Does anybody have more info on this?

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

2242 is correct.

The slots are a bit complicated.  The short answer is that the drive you have will work fine.  You can search google for B key vs. M key, but the drives with just an "M" slot are, generally, 4 lane PCIe cards and the "B" slot space is used for lanes 3 and 4 (on 4-lane cards).  The W540 has just a "B" key since it is a SATA drive and the space where the "M" key might be is unused.  It doesn't matter if the space is filled with a slot or unused contacts.  You might read this:

https://pinoutguide.com/HD/M.2_NGFF_connector_pinout.shtml

(If you care.  As I said, the short answer is that the drive you asked about will work)

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

Rich, thank you so much, it looks that the 2 nothes one would work, as the wider notch will be out and there seems to be space on the side for the additional width. I will let you know what I will order and how it works in the long run. Thank you so much for your response.

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

I used to have a W540 and I used the 512GB transcend in mine.

Re: M.2 SSD on W540 20BGCT01WW

I have never used that device or brand but I would expect it to work.  SATA is fairly simple
