NEW THINKPAD P SERIES

2017-01-09, 2:34 AM

I'm going to buy this Thinkpad P Series (below is the configuration). I want to know if I can add an extra HDD (Seagate 2 TB laptop HDD SATA III 2.5" Internal Bare Drive 9,5 mm). It comes with a 500 GB HDD, but it's too small and the SSD's still are too expensive. So my question is if can have the original 500 GB HDD and add an extra 2 TB HDD.

Max acceptable height for an HDD is 7mm (P50/P70) in the 2.5" bay:

But the P70 has a 9.5 mm optical drive that can be replaced with an HDD. Hopefully, somebody who has actually replaced the DVD with an HDD can confirm that a 9.5 mm HDD can indeed be installed there.

someone posted the psref link already, which I think it has the answer you are looking for. I just wanted to add, that if in a budget, it could make sense to look at the outlet website, http://outlet.lenovo.com/outlet_us/, from time to time they have good prices for refurbished units, if that is something you are willing to consider (same warranty as brand new I believe).

You can fit a 9.5mm in there if you alter the tabs on the back panel but this is not advised (the 7mm already is a tight fit), I just put this 2TB 7mm HDD in mine with the storage kit no issue. You will need the storage kit to add another drive as the laptop will only come with one cable and drive padding.

Sorry, I'm confused, did you put the 2 TB HDD 7 mm where the original one (500 GB in my configuration) fit? Or did you install it in another bay? Sorry, I didn't get where you put the extra HDD.

Thanks!

BTW:  The latest Seagate 2 TB Barracuda drives are supposed to be 7mm in depth therefore, ought to work fine as a replacement for the hard drive shipped with your unit.

Re: NEW THINKPAD P SERIES

If I configure the Thinkpad P50 with 500 GB, using the P/N 4XB0L63274 can I put an extra 2 TB Seagate 2 mm Barracuda? I've been trying to figure out it in the maintainance manual and it's not so clear, but it seems it should be like that m2 "slots" (or bays, named as "slot 2" and "slot 3") can be used as "slot 1" and put a SATA HDD (and the first "slot 0" would be the original 500 GB). The question is if I need an extra cable or P/N besides the P/N 4XB0L63274 and if my guess is right :-) regarding that slots "2" and "3" can be used as "slot 1" for a SATA HDD.

Thanks for helping!!!
